Every February, people across Canada celebrate Black History month to honour the contributions of Black Canadians to Canadian history and culture. The first Black History month was celebrated in February 1996; today it has grown into a significant celebration to recognize the often neglected experiences of Black Canadians. These experiences make up such an important part of our country's narrative.
Please take the opportunity, this February, to learn more about the experiences of Black Canadians in our society, and the vital role they have played throughout Canadian history.
This year, the Canadian Government has set “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries.” as the theme for Black History Month. Visit the Government of Canada's official Black History Month website, by clicking the image to the left. There you can learn more about Black History Month and the contributions of significant Black Canadians to Canadian history.
