Inclement Weather Guidelines

The safety and well-being of students and staff is our top priority and the decision to close, have a 10AM start, or dismiss early due to inclement weather is no simple matter.

Before deciding to modify the school day due to extreme weather conditions, the Superintendent consults with a variety of experts both inside and outside of the District. Our commitment is to keep students, families, and staff safe, and to keep the community informed of weather-related school closings, delays, and cancellations in a timely manner.

The District must make one decision that is appropriate for nearly 1,500 students and staff. We recognize that this decision may not always fit with individual circumstances. Therefore, we support parents and guardians in making the best decision for their families.

Parents and guardians may choose to keep their children at home if they are concerned about their child’s safety due to weather conditions.  In this event, they must notify the school and the absence will be recorded as excused.

We strive to make each call as early as possible so families can plan ahead.  Unfortunately, Nebraska weather is anything BUT predictable.  Please know we do our best to make the best possible call in every situation that keeps the safety and well-being of students in mind.

We continually monitor the forecast from the National Weather Service (NWS) in order to make the best decision for students, staff, and families in a timely manner.  For snow events, this typically starts several days before the event itself and includes phone calls, conference calls, and collaboration with area meteorologists through the NWS. The District utilizes information from the NWS out of Hastings and North Platte.

Announcements of District weather-related decisions are communicated through local media outlets including KRVN Weather Alerts and multiple District communication platforms.  Notification will be sent directly to families by phone and text through the District’s automated calling system. To receive notification through the District’s notification system, please ensure your contact information (e-mail and phone number) is accurate on Power School. Announcements are also posted on our social media accounts (Facebook, Twitter) and the District website

Please note, high school activity and athletic event decisions are determined on a case-by-case basis and communicated by the activities director.

Every call we make is a difficult one.  We will do our best to make the decision that keeps the safety and well-being of our students and staff at the forefront.
