Yes! There will be random extra credit opportunities given throughout the semester, however, students are always more than welcome to approach me with an independent extra credit proposal, which I may accept, suggest changes to, or deny depending on the idea. Points will be awarded based on the effort, quality, and subject relatedness of the project.
Ideas may include reading a historical book or magazine, watching a historical movie/TV show/documentary, listening to a history themed podcast, interviewing a friend or family member about a historical event or travel experience, show & tell of historical artifacts, building dioramas of significant battles or places of historical significance. Miss Halvorson would love to hear about any other ideas you may have as well that better fit your personal interests and skills.
The top five people in the class on the IXL Social Studies Skills Leaderboard will receive extra credit for mastering the most social studies skills. The “Pioneer Spirit Board” extra credit opportunity is always an option as well, but may only be utilized once per quarter.
Yes! In order to be eligible for a retake, students must have one (handwritten single spaced) page of notes stapled to their test when it is turned into prove that they did try and study for the test the first time around. Once the test has been corrected, and if the student is unsatisfied with their score, they may retake it for full credit.
Retakes are to be arranged to be taken during Homeroom, under my supervision, and must be taken within one week of receiving their original test score.
Yes, late work will be accepted up to one week prior to the end of the quarter.
Late lesson assignments are docked 50% due to the student missing out on 50% of the learning process. When a student does not complete a lesson on time, they miss out on being able to participate in class ‘correcture’, which is a major part of the learning process. Due to lack of preparation, participation, and the fact that the correct answers are posted online after we have completed the chapter’s assignments, 50% credit will be the best possible grade you are able to receive on late lessons.
There is no late penalty for individual online assignments (IXL, iCivics, MissonUS, etc.) but you have to fill out a “Late Social Studies Online Assignment Form” (available in the black tray tower) so Miss Halvorson knows to look for your late assignment so she can give you the grade you earned.
An assignment is considered late if it is not finished by the beginning of the class period it is set to be due.
Late work should be turned in using the late work slot designated for student's class, in the black tray tower. If you are in a class that requires an online submission of an assignment, either via Google Classroom or via a 3rd party website (ex: iCivics, MissionUS, IXL etc.), fill out a “Social Studies Late Online Assignment Form” (available in the black tray tower) after you have submitted your late assignment to notify Miss Halvorson that it’s completed, turned in, and ready to be graded, otherwise it will likely not be seen by Miss Halvorson.
In short, grades - yes, and assignments - most of the time.
Google Classroom is a resource for students to use to double check due dates, assignment details, and general course information. But the vast majority of assignments are expected to be completed as a hard copy.
Please ignore the grades feature on Google Classroom, as I do not utilize that particular feature so it is inaccurate. If you are curious about a social studies grade, please refer to ParentVue or StudentVue.
To stay up-to-date as possible and receive assignment reminders, students, please download the Google Classroom app, and parents, please download the Goodridge School's app.

Please do NOT 'share' an assignment with me in an attempt to submit it; that is how assignments go missing, and it will not be graded.
