Students will bring home a S.T.A.R. binder and their agenda each night. Students will write our daily assignments in their agenda. Any work not completed at school will need to be completed as homework. Homework is always due the next school day. Please sign the bottom of the agenda page each evening so I know you had a chance to glance at it. You may use this as a way to communicate with me. You are also welcome to email before 10:00 a.m. or call the office if your child is leaving early for any reason. If your child switches between being a car rider and a bus rider, please note when things change in the agenda. It gets confusing for kids to keep up with the changes otherwise. Please have your child clear out their take-home side each night. Graded papers will come home every Friday in the green folder. Please sign the sheet in the folder letting me know you received them. It is imperative that students have their S.T.A.R. binder and all of its contents every day! Students will miss Friday Fun as a consequence for not having his/her binder because this is a needed item for learning.
Students will bring papers to be corrected home at times. Please look over their work and sign the paper before it is returned to school. Students that return the work without corrections or without a parent signature will not be allowed to improve their grade for that assignment. Corrections count for 70% of credit.
L4T (Language), M4T(Math) & G4T(Geography) Spiral Review: These are weekly assignments for students to
practice math, reading and social studies skills that we are working on in class. These assignments are
handed out each Monday and are due on every Thursday. We review all problems/questions in class on
Thursday. There will be a math quiz each Friday to check for understanding. We allow class time
to complete these pages, and are not expected to be completed as homework. It is expected that
students complete one section per day so not to get overwhelmed. I do have some students who like
to complete it all at once so they don’t have to worry about it.
Students are encouraged to bring a water bottle labeled with their name each day. Please make sure the bottle doesn't leak when it tips over. A hydrated brain leads to better learning! Plain and flavored water are the only beverages allowed in the classroom unless a student earns a special drink from home as a reward. You will get a note from me when this happens.
When you think about our large class size and how many birthday treats we are given each year, that really adds up to a lot of unhealthy eating. We spend a lot of time passing out treats, etc. I would like to ask birthday treats are not brought in this year. Instead, we are going to party!!! Your child will choose how he/she would like to celebrate. There will be a list of games/team building activities or ot eat lunch with me and some friends, etc your child will choose from as a celebration. Your child’s special day will be honored with time spent in a more memorable way. You are welcome to attend the celebration! Your child's celebration will be at the end of our school day.
I encourage students to read at least 20 minutes a day outside of school. I understand some evenings are busier than others so it may not happen every night. Spelling practice and this reading are the only homework required other than additional practice work if your child is needing some strengthening but I will contact you about that if the need arises. Students may also have homework if they didn't finish their classwork during the day but this should be a rare occasion.
Mrs. Wagner and I will support kids in finding their “Just Right Books” here at school. Just Right Books are books that are at students’ independent reading level. Students may read any books that interest them for this goal. They do get the most benefit from books at their reading level but if they want to read a certain book outside of that level, that is completely fine. I just wouldn’t allow too many easy books unless it is for fluency practice.
Your child will need to leave his/her cell phone or phone watch in their backpacks for the school day if the device must come to school for after school communication. Please make sure the device is turned off. Watches set to "School Mode" are fine at this time.
We will access most of our online resources through Clever. You should have Clever set up on your home device from the past few years but please let me know if you need the instructions to add it again.
Your child is welcome to bring a healthy snack each day to be consumed during our afternoon recess. Please send things that won't get hands messy. If you send a snack that needs to be refrigerated, please send an ice pack to keep it cold as I can't store items in the refrigerator.
Your child is welcome to bring a beach towel marked with his/her name. We will use these to lay on the floor at various times.
We will refer to ourselves as a “class family”. As in all families, we will have a special place in the classroom where students can bring a picture or certificate they are proud of to post on our “fridge”. Please send copies as "the fridge" is in a well traveled area.
