Every night students will bring home a take home folder that contains items such as graded assignments, classroom newsletters, school newsletters, school flyers, etc. On the inside of the folder, there is a pocket on the left hand side for items that need to be returned to school. This is where homework needs to go or any notes from you that I need to see. On the right hand side of the folder will be things that need to stay home. I ask that parents and guardians look through the papers and send the folder back to school with the child. It will be the child’s responsibility to hand me any notes or any other kinds of information from home that I need to see.
Students in my class will earn tickets based on making respectful choices. I will then pull tickets randomly and give out prizes on Fridays. They can also receive tickets daily for receiving compliments, being helpful, etc
I have a plan that I follow for students who choose to break the rules. Initially, I will give them a verbal warning. If the behavior continues, I will conference with the child to work together to problem solve the situation. If further steps need to be taken, I will begin taking away privileges. The student will also complete a “Think Sheet”. My next step will be contacting parents or sending the student to the office based on the severity of the situation. The main goal behind my plan is to keep the learning environment positive and safe for all students. It may be a good idea to discuss and reinforce this with your child.
We will be using agenda books on a daily basis in class. In this agenda book, students will write what they do in each subject daily. They will indicate which assignments are completed by placing a check by them. I will teach students how to use them effectively. I expect agendas to go home each night and be signed by a parent. It is important that you look at it each night. I may write a short note in the books, too. This is a great communication tool to be used between school and home. Organization is an important skill that can determine success in life. I will teach students how to use agendas effectively, and I ask that you help also.
Students who use their time wisely should not have a lot of homework. Any assignment that is not completed in class should be completed at home that evening. This work is due first thing the following morning. If it is not returned, the student will have to complete it during their study hall recess. The content of one assignment is often required in order for the student to understand the next. If you feel your child is not doing enough school work in the evening, he or she may study spelling words, read silently or aloud, or practice math facts.
Students are allowed to bring a healthy snack to eat during the afternoon. It has to be in an enclosed bag and enough for just that one day. Sharing of snacks is not allowed between peers.
Students may bring treats to share with the class on their birthday or six months prior if their birthday is in the summer. It is very helpful if the treats are easy to pass out, such as cookies, cupcakes, ice cream bars, or candy bars. Please let me know two days in advance by e-mail, phone, or written note if you are planning to bring treats. I want to be sure to allow time in the schedule for your child’s special day!
This year, you will notice that your fourth grader will become more independent and more responsible. Your student will take pride in his or her accomplishments and abilities. Each student will be responsible for keeping his or her desk and supplies in order. Students will also be responsible for recording information in their agenda books and turning in assignments on time. This responsibility does not happen overnight, but with my guidance at school and your support at home, I believe that your child can achieve remarkable things this school year. Thank you in advance for your help with this!
