ABOUT ME
I grew up in the small rural town of Conway Springs, KS and graduated in 1983 with 41 other students. After high school I studied Meteorology for two years at The University of Oklahoma. After interning at the National Weather Service, I realized my heart was just not in the study of weather and found my true passion was in teaching.
I transferred to Emporia State University and earned my Bachelor of Science in Secondary Education in 1988 and was certified to teach Chemistry, Physics, and Earth/Space Sciences. For my last semester of college, I chose to student teach at Goddard High School and Goddard Junior High School. I was asked to take over the physics and chemistry program at Goddard High School upon my graduation from ESU.
I married Michelle Murray in 2000. Michelle is a former English teacher and currently the Lead Guidance Counselor at GHS. We have one son currently at GHS and our oldest son attends Kansas State University.
In 2001, I earned my Master of Science in the Physical Sciences from Emporia State University with a major in Chemistry and minor in Physics. During my Masters work, I was introduced to the Arizona State Modeling Method for teaching Physics. Since 1997, I have been using this curriculum in my Physics courses. I have also introduced modeling approaches into my Chemistry program and my thesis was research to see how this approach could be applied to Chemistry curricula. I have also trained middle school teachers in the modeling approaches during summer workshops at Emporia State University. If you are interested in more on the ASU modeling program go to the following links: http://modeling.asu.edu/ or http://modelinginstruction.org/
I have also been fully trained to teach Advanced Placement (AP) Chemistry and have attended three AP Chemistry Summer Institutes in Tulsa, OK, Ft. Worth, TX, and San Antonio, TX. Two of those institutes were for advanced topics and I was asked to present some of my methodologies at one of those institutes.
I am or have been a member of the American Chemical Society (ACS), American Association of Chemistry Teachers (AACT), Kansas Association of Chemistry Teachers (KACT), National Science Teachers Association (NSTA), Kansas Association of Teachers of Science (KATS), American Modeling Teachers Association (AMTA) and The National Education Association (NEA). I have also served as an officer in many of these organizations and I’m the current Treasurer for the Goddard Education Association.
I have served as an outreach educator for Wichita State University teaching General Chemistry I and II. I have also served as an adjunct faculty member for Newman University and have taught a Physical Science course on campus there as well as teaching a concurrent enrollment course for General Chemistry I and II here at Goddard.
I have also been an active leader with Cub Scout Pack 776 here in Goddard where I was a Den Leader and served as Treasurer for that organization and have been a Treasurer for Boy Scout Troop 577 in Wichita. My youngest son is in high school at GHS and is currently about to complete his Eagle Rank. His Eagle project was to build a new walkway across the GHS Outdoor Wildlife Site (OWLS) waterway. This was completed in the Summer of 2024. My oldest son is an Eagle Scout. His Eagle project was to put QR code signs up in the GHS Outdoor Wildlife Site (OWLS) and build a website that allows a person to walk the area and learn about it through their phone. His project was completed in the Fall of 2020.

I plan to retire from the teaching profession at the end of this school year on June 1, 2025. It has been my pleasure to serve this district for the last 37 years.
Inherited from my late brother, this is a labor of love in memory of him. He was never able to restore it, so it is now up to me. In additon, it is just so cool!
This was the first car I purchased when I graduated college. It is a first generation RX-7 and has the GSL-SE package. The rotary engine is just so smooth and powerful and I can't describe to you how fun it is to drive.
CURRENT DUTIES
My current teaching duties include, Honors Chemistry I (a Pre-AP level course), Honors Chemistry II (General Chemistry I (5hrs) with Newman University), Honors Chemistry III (General Chemistry II (5 hrs) with Newman University), and Physics. I am also sponsor of the GHS Science Club and Science National Honor Society GHS Chapter as well as Chair of the GHS Science Department.
I chose GHS for my student teaching assignment because the science program had a great reputation around the state of Kansas. It is my goal to maintain a strong science program at GHS for years to come.
