Goals of the Experience

  1. Anticipate how to promote optimal performance for a student in a problem solving interview
  2. Examine assumptions about a student's mathematical knowledge.

Overview of the Experience

The Problem Solving Analysis Experience calls for teacher candidate to

  1. Predict how a student will perform within a problem solving interview by constructing a series of cartoons
  2. Depict how a student performed within a problem solving interview by constructing a series of cartoons
  3. Reflect on the difference between the prediction and what actually happened.

The Problem Solving Analysis experience was developed to be completed alongside a the Teachers Empowered to Advance Change in Mathematics Project (TEACH MATH) Problem Solving Interview Activity within the Case Study Module. The problem solving interview follows an interview protocol where the teacher candidate is given different types of problems and a decision tree for how and when to ask each problem. This protocol can be found within the download available on the Case Study Module page of the TEACH MATH website
