FEBRUARY
Good morning WK, it’s February 13, Day B and these are your morning announcements. WK would like to begin by acknowledging that we are in Mi’kma’ki , the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. We are all Treaty people, and our relationship is based on peace and friendship. Acknowledging Mi’kmaw traditional and ancestral territory is a way of showing respect for and honouring our shared Treaty relationship. It is one of many important steps we can take toward reconciliation.

Today as part of African Heritage Month, we recognize Donald Oliver. In 1990, Mr. Oliver became the first Black Canadian man to be appointed to the Canadian Senate where he advocated for diversity and fairness in the workplace. In sports, from 1895 to the 1930s, the Coloured Hockey League existed. This league was a pioneer in the sport of hockey and many historians credit its players with inventing the slapshot and the technique of goalies dropping to their knees to make saves. These are moves that eventually had a great impact on the game in the NHL.
We recognize that African Nova Scotians are a distinct people whose histories, legacies and contributions have enriched Nova Scotia for over 400 years. We recognize, despite these histories and legacies, our Black community and learners continue to face inequities and injustices that we should actively be taking steps to correct.
