Before working in Nova Scotia in any of the skilled trades, you need to know the apprenticeship and trade certification requirements in this province.
Apprenticeship is a form of post-secondary education for both young and mature individuals who want to be certified to work in a skilled trade. It is a combination of on‑the‑job and technical training where skilled trades professionals (certified journeypersons) pass on knowledge and skills to learners (apprentices).

Several trades are compulsory certified under our legislation (the Apprenticeship and Trades Qualifications Act) and are identified on the list of trades by a yellow dot. This means there is a legal requirement to:
Hold a Certificate of Qualification issued in Nova Scotia; OR
Hold a recognized Certificate of Qualification issued by another province/territory in Canada (you may be required to obtain an equivalency card); OR
Register as an apprentice.
Some trades are compulsory certified under another regulatory authority and are identified on the list of trades by a green dot. Their licensing or certification requirements must be complied with.
Most trades are NOT compulsory certified.
Red Seal Program was established in Canada so that skilled trades workers can move and work across Canada. Through the program, both apprentices who have completed their training and certified journey persons are able to obtain a Red Seal endorsement on their Certificate of Qualification by successfully completing a Red Seal Examination.
The Red Seal endorsement is a recognized standard in jurisdictions across Canada, one that employers look for as an indication of skills and competency. Once you obtain the Red Seal endorsement, you can work anywhere in Canada without further training or examination. Individuals in the categories below may be eligible to apply to challenge the Red Seal Exam or apply for provincial certification.
