The English fiction collection at Rocky Lake Junior High is organized by genre. Categories are:
Each genre is colour coded and, within each section, books are organized in alphabetical order by the first three letters of the author's last name.
The Percy Jackson books, by Rick Riordan, for example, are in the Fantasy section, and the call number looks like this.
F (for fantasy)
FIC (for fiction)
RIO (first three letters of Riordan)
Non-fiction / informational books in the RLJH Library are organized with the Dewey Decimal System. This system allows libraries to put books in order by subject.
Subjects are arranged into broad categories with numbers from 000 to 999 (see the chart, below), Each subject is then broken down further into ten sections (for example, in the 900s, biographies are in the 920s). The "ones" and numbers to the right of a decimal provide even more detail about the subject. The first three letters of the author's last name complete the call number.
For example example, the call number for the book Guide to weather: A photographic journey through the skies, by Michael Allaby, looks like this:
551.6
ALL
Here's what that number means:
551.6
(500s - Natural Sciences & Mathematics, 550 - Earth Sciences, 551 - Geology, hydrology, meterology, 551.6 - climatology and weather)ALL
(first three letters of Allaby)
