Business Technology 11 Course Outline

Business Technology 11 is an academic credit and meets the requirements for a technology credit. All five modules must be completed to receive a full credit. Through the processes involved with the production of business documents, students learn to apply the conventions, practices, principles, and employability skills within personal and business environments. As the role of technology in communications and business grows, the demand for thoughtful, skilled individuals expands. Business Technology 11 provides students with opportunities to develop basic keyboarding, word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation skills, and to explore the range of roles and workplaces where the creating of business documents is a core activity.


Materials

Students will require:

  • Duo-tang or pocket folder to be kept in the lab (not a binder)
  • Pen/pencil/highlighter
  • Password to access the JLI network (provided)
  • GNSPES email (provided)


Expectations

In order to be successful in Business Technology 11, students are expected to be responsible learners with a strong, independent work ethic. Following are the expectations:

  • Be on time and prepared.
  • Be respectful.
  • Be in class. If you have to miss a class for a legitimate reason, make arrangements for your work in advance. Making up work/getting notes/passing in assignments are your responsibility.
  • Show respect for school property and the property of others. The computers we have are a privilege and we want everyone to benefit from them.
  • Be honest. Do your own work. Plagiarism will result is a mark of 0.

  • Pass in your work on time.
  • Be positive. Give your best, get involved, and enjoy!
  • Work must be completed in class, under the supervision of the teacher.


Extra Help

If at any time during the course you do not understand a concept, or require an extension please consult your teacher and arrange for extra help. Extra help is available (as needed) at 11:30 on Mondays in Lab 330, and other arrangements can be made upon request.


Late Work Policy

In accordance with Board Policy, students are expected to complete all assigned work by the due date outlined by the teacher. If students are ill, or special circumstances arise, bring these issues to teacher’s attention immediately to discuss. Late assignments may be accepted; however, if an assignment has been returned to the class, in order to receive value for the assignment, it must be completed from the beginning during extra help time with a teacher.

Assessment Strategies

Qualitative Informal Assessments

For each unit, students will have a rubric to guide their activities. As students complete an activity, feedback will be provided, as well as an opportunity to improve if necessary. At the end of the unit students will be assessed according to their skill level – mastery, proficiency, acceptable, developing or limited.

Quantitative Formal Assessments

For each unit, students will be required to complete formal assessments that demonstrate their knowledge of the concepts that have been learned and practiced.

Final Assessment

The final assessment for the course is an integrated activity that includes a task from each unit. The final assessment will be examined qualitatively and quantitatively to determine the skill level that has been attained.

Final marks will be based on the following evaluation scheme:

Module 1 Touch Keyboarding (20)

Students will be expected to

1.1 demonstrate correct touch-system technique

1.2 set up and organize workstations safely and efficiently

1.3 develop keyboarding speed and accuracy

Module 2 Document Processing (25)

Students will be expected to

2.1 apply formatting skills to a range of workplace documents

2.2 use the keyboard to compose and format text for a range of personal and workplace purposes

2.3 integrate data from multiple files to create an original document

Module 3 Spreadsheets (20)

Students will be expected to

3.1 identify the purpose, characteristics, and terminology associated with the use of spreadsheet application software

3.2 manipulate data using spreadsheet software to solve problems

3.3 use mathematical features of spreadsheet software to manage data

3.4 produce functional, informative, and effectively formatted charts to present a range of workplace data

3.5 create and format spreadsheets to solve a range of workplace problems

Module 4 Desktop Publishing (20)

Students will be expected to

4.1 identify the purpose, characteristics, and terminology associated with the use of desktop publishing software

4.2 demonstrate an understanding of copyright and intellectual property laws

4.3 use desktop publishing software features to enhance publications

4.4 design and create a variety of print and online publications for specific purposes and audiences using desktop publishing software

Module 5 Business Technology Fundamentals (5)

Students will be expected to

5.1 use hardware and software terminology and features

5.2 access and use information responsibly and ethically

5.3 investigate career opportunities related to information technology

5.4 acquire employability skills and attitudes needed for life and work experiences

5.6 manage common hardware and software processes, files, and basic workstation procedures
