Sundays are the worst days to do laundry! Try to pick a day through the middle of the week when the laundry room will be less busy.
Get to know your roommate before moving in (if you can). Your space will be small, so this will allow you to coordinate who brings the mini fridge and who brings the microwave. This will also help you to get to know them a bit and will hopefully help you feel a bit less nervous about moving in with a stranger.
If you already know your roommate, that's great too! However, living with a friend can be a challenging experience, so make sure you communicate plenty and have the same lifestyle.
Set boundaries with your roommate, and respect theirs!
If possible, keep some snacks in your dorm for if you miss a meal at the meal hall or if you want late night study snacks. Unlike your parents' kitchen, meal halls aren't open 24/7.
To help your new space feel like home, bring some decorations, pictures, area rugs, and other cozy items.
A small fan or dehumidifier goes a long way to help circulate the air in your room. Be cautious of scented things, as your roommate or neighbours may have sensitivities. (Note that open flame items like candles are not allowed).
No pets allowed - but goldfish are usually welcome!
Know who to call in case of emergency! It's helpful to have contact information for campus security, a taxi/ride share service, and your RA.
Storage bins, wall hangers, shoe racks, and other storage solutions will be key to keeping your space tidy and organized.
