Some reasons children may see the school counsellor

How do you typically work with students?

What is the referral process?

If your child is referred for support the referring teacher will notify you.  The school counsellors will then contact home to arrange for a consent form to be signed. Consent must be signed for your child to participate. After the consent form is signed the child is added to my caseload.  In most cases I will contact parent(s) to keep them updated periodically. Parents may also contact me if you wish to refer your child for support and the same protocol will be followed.

Do you work with parents and guardians?

I am available to discuss your children with you. You may reach out by email or phone (please just be mindful of confidentiality concerns when using emails).   I may be able to offer support and help with problem-solving, as well as suggest resources and ideas.  Often, a team approach is taken where we collaborate with the school staff and your child to help them have a successful experience at school.

How does confidentiality work?

Keeping a trusting counselling relationship with students is very important.  As a result, most of what happens during individual sessions is confidential between the counsellor and the child.  This is more important for older children than younger ones. You know your child best and see them daily, and are therefore a valuable ally- my hope is that we will collaborate regularly.
