About Me

Originally from Halifax, NS I have been teaching for 13 years in the Halifax Regional and Strait Regional School Boards.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music from Mount Allison University and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Western Ontario.. My Teaching subject areas are Music, Social Studies, and French.

My music interests are varied and range from early music through to modern 20th century classical music, pop, jazz, blues, rock and country. I am especially interested in African songs and in the 20th century music of eastern europe (composers such as Einaudi, Part, Gorecki).

I began singing in choirs when I was 6 and now have over 30 years of choral experience!

When I am not teaching I can often be found running, cooking, reading or catching up on course work. I also enjoy watching soccer, formula one racing, relaxing at the cottage, and exercising.

In 2018 I ran my first marathon and am planning on running an ultra marathon (50km) this fall.

Teaching Philosophy

The tone we set together in this classroom should make it possible for you:

(a) to learn thinking strategies (with which to question, to hypothesize, to evaluate)

(b) to learn how to learn -- to discover meaning for yourself; to feel comfortable collaborating with your peers and me in a supportive environment (to see yourself as central to your learning about the world through music)

(c) to be tolerant of a range of viewpoints, (feeling confident to form and express your own perception of the music you encounter)

(d) to see me as a positive role model who takes joy in sharing this learning time with you (to feel free to question the whys and wherefores of the curriculum and my implementation of it)
