I am so excited to journey with you as we add more tools to your trigonometric toolbox. This video will give you an overview of what you will have achieved at the end of this unit.
Note: As said in the video, this resource is primarily intended for students taking Math 11 in Nova Scotia.
All activities in this resource pertain to SCO G03 in Nova Scotia's Math 11 curriculum. Completion of all activities, worksheets, and checkpoints included in this website will meet the below indicators.
SCO G03: Students will be expected to solve problems that involve the cosine law and the sine law, including the ambiguous case.
Performance Indicators:
G03.01 Draw a diagram to represent a problem that involves the cosine law and/or sine law.
G03.02 Explain the steps in a given proof of the sine law and of the cosine law.
G03.03 Solve a problem involving the cosine law that requires the manipulation of a formula.
G03.04 Explain, concretely, pictorially or symbolically, whether zero, one or two triangles exist, given two sides and a non-included angle.
G03.05 Solve a problem involving the sine law that requires the manipulation of a formula.
G03.06 Solve a contextual problem that involves the cosine law and/or the sine law.
This unit also builds proficiency in several mathematical processes. These processes include reasoning, forming connections among previous math topics, and addressing contextual problems by problem solving.
As well, this unit touches on several of Nova Scotia's competencies including:
Critical thinking through problem solving
Technological fluency as you learn to use programs such as Geogebra to support learning.
Creativity and innovation, such as in activity 2 where one must manipulate the information they are given to concretely depict the number of possible triangles.
This resource is designed to support at-home learning for young adults during the Covid-19 pandemic. As such, I have attempted to limit the number of materials needed to complete the activities I have suggested. Required materials include:
Pencil
Eraser
Paper
Scientific calculator
Laptop/Chromebook and internet access
A printer is helpful as it allows you to print off the worksheets provided. However, you may also copy down the questions and work through the questions on your own paper.
Activity 2 is the only activity that further materials are required. If you cannot gain access to these materials, this activity may be skipped. The activity is designed to provide a visual demonstration that sometimes zero, one, or two triangles may result form the given dimensions. These materials include:
Pipe cleaners or string
Tape
A coloured marker
Scissors
Ruler
It is important to keep track of how you are progressing within this unit. The unit beings with a diagnostic assessment to determine if you have the pre-requisite knowledge needed to complete this unit.
To support your ability to self-assess throughout the unit, I have provided 2 checkpoints, one after each of the first two sections. Do not progress to the next section until you are able to confidently complete the current checkpoint. This does not mean you must get 100% on the checkpoint, but if you made a mistake, you should be able to determine where you went wrong and why.
The unit concludes with activity five. This activity allows you to apply your learnings to several contextual settings. Assuming you have completed all activities up to this point and are able to complete this activity without relying heavily on your notes, you have hit all required performance indicators for this unit.
Everyone learns differently. Therefore, I have designed the activities throughout the unit to accommodate these different learning styles. Within this unit you will find:
videos with helpful computer graphics
auditory explanations of proofs
worksheets for those who learn best by "doing"
interactive online "quizzes" through Quizizz
several hands-on and self-exploration activities you can do in at home. These activities will help you really understand what you are learning, rather than simply obscure formulas.
Before you dive in, do the Quizizz below to review some of the prerequisite knowledge you will need to complete this unit. If you need further practice after completing the Quizizz, click on the review button below to be taken to a page with further resources.
