Tell me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn.

One of my strengths as an educator is that I create and provide opportunities for my students to engage in hands-on learning experiences. By providing students with opportunities for kinesthetic learning, we give students the freedom to learn from their mistakes, develop life long skills and collaborate with others. It also provides students with a better understanding of the material being presented and leads to overall engagement and excitement.
Over the past several years, I have had an opportunity to participate in several kinds of experiential learning in my classroom.
Nova Scotia Chick Hatchery Program
Students were able to experience the life cycle of egg to chick. Students were responsible for monitoring the eggs, as well taking care of the chicks after they were born.
Fish Friends Pictou County Rivers Association
In a classroom aquarium, students watched salmon eggs develop into fry and were involved in the day to day care of them. In the spring, the students released the fry back into the stream, from which they came.
Fun fact: Did you know that salmon are anadromous fish? This means that they begin their life in fresh water and then migrate to the ocean to feed and grow. They will eventually return to their home located in fresh water to spawn.
Pets in the Classroom
The most recent addition to our classroom has been two hermit crabs. I was able to purchase these pets through a grant from Pets in the Classroom. Students have been involved in learning about the hermit crab's habitat, diet, and life span.
Fun Fact: Hermit crabs use gills for breathing!
