Grade 1
In September we will focus on
Refer to end of Primary Benchmarks: Read instructional text level C/D and higher
Control directionality and one-to-one matching across several lines of print
Track print with eyes, using finger only at points of difficulty
Self-monitor using meaning and pictures
Self-monitor using initial letter and its corresponding sound
Read and write at least 10 words with automaticity
Take apart simple and some multisyllabic words while reading
Group familiar 2- and 3- word phrases so reading begins to sound smooth
Begin to attend to punctuation
Talk about ideas in the text and make predictions
Ask and answer questions about the text
Locate the 1st and last letter when reading
Reread to problem solve meaning or new words
Remember and use language patterns in text
Use known words to check and confirm
Use pictures and beginning sounds of a word to problem solve
Grade 2
In September we will focus on
Read instructional text level I and higher with fluency and comprehension
Engage in daily reading/viewing with a variety of texts as sources of interest, enjoyment, and information
Search for and use different kinds of information (meaning, structure, visual)
Problem solve unknown words in different ways (e.g., syllables, known parts)
Make multiple attempts until a word is solved
Use finger pointing only at points of difficulty
Begin to build an understanding of present and past tense and contractions
Identify and use punctuation in text (period, question mark, apostrophes, quotation marks)
Read 45+ high frequency words with automaticity
Talk about what books are liked and why they are a favourite
Draw inferences based on setting and illustrations
Recall the relevant information to understand the story and retell in sequence
Use background knowledge to understand information
