ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION EASTERN MARINE BRANCH #161 BURSARY

ELIGIBITY:
Legion bursaries are available to students who served or whose parent, grandparent or great-grandparent is serving or honourably served in the:
• Canadian Armed Forces, Commonwealth forces or their wartime allies, or
• as a regular member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, or
• as a Peace Officer in a special duty area or on a special duty operation, or
• who served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime
and who:
• have completed High School and are continuing their education on a full-time basis at a Post Secondary Educational Institution. This includes students who have finished high school and “have taken a break” from formal education so long as the other criteria are met, or who are already in a Post Secondary Educational Institution. Post graduate studies however are not admissible for Branch bursaries;
• reside, or have their principal domicile, within the boundaries of the Eastern Marine Branch 161 - these are communities east of the Ross Road (along Highways 7, 107 and 207) to the intersection of Highways 7 and 107, Musquodoboit Harbour; and
• have an academic standing high enough that they are likely to succeed at the post-secondary level.
APPLICATIONS:
Shall be forwarded to the Bursary Chairperson / Secretary of Eastern Marine Branch No. 161 of the Royal Canadian Legion, 6644, Highway #7, Gaetz Brook, Nova Scotia, BOJ 1N0, or may be left at the Branch no later than 6 pm Friday, May 24th 2024.
The student is responsible for submitting their application with appropriate records, statements and references as follows:
• a letter, written by the student, outlining educational goals, participation in extracurricular activities and how the student plans to finance his or her studies.
• a letter of reference from a Guidance Counselor or from at least one teacher as to the applicant’s character and qualifications
• academic records or a transcript of marks
• a letter of acceptance from the Post Secondary Institution must accompany this application
• proof of eligible service of the parent, grandparent or great-grandparent
• any other references about character or extra-curricular activities
Incomplete applications will not be considered – no follow-up action will be taken
Bursary amounts will be decided by the Branch Bursary Committee.

NOVA SCOTIA FREEMASONS BURSARY (JOHN ALBRO LODGE)

These scholarships will be awarded to students who:
• Demonstrate financial need;
• Have participated in voluntary community service activities;
• Will be pursuing post-secondary studies in the fall of 2024 at a Community College or University in Atlantic Canada.

NOVA SCOTIA FREEMASONS BURSARY (ASHLAR LODGE)

HARLAND DOOKS MEMORIAL TUITION BURSARY

This $2000 Bursary was established in 2000 in memory of Harland Maurice Dooks of Head of Jeddore who, since a young child, had volunteered and raised funds for Twin Oaks/ Birches and many other community organizations. At the time of his passing in 1999, due to poor health, at the age of 52, Harland was a member of our Foundation and the bursary was named in his honor.
The Bursary is presented annually by the Twin Oaks/Birches Heath Care Charitable Foundation to any Grade 12 graduate and is intended to assist young women and men who are interested in furthering their education.
Volunteer activity with community organizations and financial need are all considered in determining the merit of the applicant.

ROYAL CANADIAN LEGION FOUR HARBOURS BRANCH #120 BURSARY

Four Harbours Branch #120 will make available bursaries to students who have been accepted into Post-Secondary Institutions and who are in need of financial assistance. To be eligible, their parents, grandparents, or great grandparents must be serving or honorably served (written proof of eligible service of the parent, grandparent or great grandparent must be included with application):
in the Canadian Armed Forces, Commonwealth forces or their wartime allies, or
as a regular member of the RCMP, or
as a Peace Officer in a special duty area or on a duty operation, or
who served in the Merchant Navy or Ferry Command during wartime.
Applicant must reside, or have principal residence within the boundaries of the Four Harbours Branch #120. These communities are along Highway 7, east of the intersection of Highway 7 and 107, Musquodoboit Harbour to the bridge crossing the Tangier River.
A letter of acceptance from the Post Secondary Institution and a reference letter from a teacher or guidance counselor supporting the applicant's submission for the bursary must also accompany this application.
The student must provide a letter explaining how they plan to finance their education, why they are in need of financial assistance, how they plan to use the bursary funds and provide an outline of their educational goals and objectives.
Paper applications are available outside of Ms d'Entremont's office.
Submit completed applications to Ms d'Entremont by May 31, 2024.
LAKE ECHO & AREA LIONS CLUB TUITION SCHOLARSHIPS

BRIAN DICKIE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

The Brian Dickie Scholarships are awarded annually from the Scholarship Trust Fund established by the late William Brian Dickie. Mr. Dickie willed the bulk of his life saving to ESDH students in the form of a scholarship fund. Many past ESDH students have been the proud recipients of the Brian Dickie Award over the past 18 years. This award has supported our grads and provided a boost of confidence as these students take a big step in the next stage of their lives. To date, the fund has been able to provide close to $600,000 in financial support to out graduates.
Applications are available outside of Ms d'Entremont's office.
Applications are due at 9am on June 3rd to Ms d'Entremont.
Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted.
WAVES Award
$500

WAVES (Women Addressing Violence on the Eastern Shore) is committed to engaging in community education activities that promote respect, safety, and inclusion for all women/girls and those who identify as female. Our goals involve moving towards providing support, networking, and services to all women on the Eastern Shore facing issues of violence. Activities may include, but are not limited to, establishing safe spaces, temporary shelters, transportation, self-help network, referrals to existing services, and victim support.
We are offering a $500 scholarship to a student who meets the following criteria:
· Embodies WAVES ideals through their studies and/or other activities (including volunteer work)
· Will graduate from ESDH in 2024.
· Plans to attend a recognized postsecondary institution in 2024 or 2025.
· Any gender
To be considered, applicants must submit a short description (approximately 250 words), on or before June 3, 2024 which outlines how they intend to improve the lives of women through their studies and/or other activities, and how or if they have done so in the past. Submissions will be assessed on how the student will utilize their studies/activities, as well as on the creativity and/or commitment of their approach. The successful candidate will be chosen by a committee of WAVES Board Members and their decision is final.

BRAD MARKS MEMORIAL AWARD

Awarded to a graduating student scheduled to attend the Nova Scotia Community College. In memory of Mr. Brad Marks, remembered for his smile, willingness to help others but, most of all, his unwavering love for his family. Given to a deserving student who characterizes a commitment to hard work, this award is funded by money raised by the Musquodoboit Harbour community and the staff of Lawton’s Drug Store.

CHEZZETCOOK AND DISTRICT LIONS CLUB BURSARY

The Lions Club provides two bursaries each year, one for University and the other for Community College for current year graduates. Students must live within the boundaries of the Chezzetcook Lions Club, namely East Chezzetcook, West Chezzetcook, Head of Chezzetcook, Gaetz Brook, Seaforth and Porters Lake.

Clifford grew up on the Eastern Shore and attended ESDH. He graduated in 2005 and after that he attended NSCC and took a trade to become an Electrician. EASTERN SHORE DELTA SCHOLARSHIP

Eastern Shore Delta is a local Chapter of Delta Waterfowl. Delta Waterfowl has been around for over 100 years in both the United States and Canada. Since the beginning, Delta’s mission has been to enhance waterfowl populations while securing the future of waterfowl hunting.
This is where you fit in; Eastern Shore Delta is looking to give out two $500.00 Scholarships to graduating high school students from Eastern Shore District High School.
Criteria – (Must have)
- Student must be an avid outdoors person
- Student must be entering into a post-secondary study involving wildlife, biology or environmental sciences.
Criteria – (Helpful to have)
- Student holds a valid migratory bird hunting license
Application Procedure
- Submit a short essay 250-500 words on the following:
o A waterfowl hunting experience you had, or
o How waterfowl hunting has impacted you
- Along with your essay please submit a scanned copy of post-secondary acceptance letter
- If applicable Submit a scanned copy of last year’s Migratory Bird License
- Please include your name, mailing address, phone number and email address so you can be contacted if your submission is selected.
