Four - Six

Grade Four

Through song, activities, written work, games, use of classroom instruments, students begin to read, create and present songs using more complex music notation. Also, our music literacy skills start to progress with the reading of songs we are learning in class. Students move from singing songs in unison (or one part) into part singing, both in rounds, canons, partner songs and beginning harmony.

At this age, students begin to learn a specific instrument as a class, learning the skills, techniques and learning new songs on the instrument during our music classes. During the 2019-2020 school year, students will experience learning beginning ukulele.

In Grade Four, students also start to learn about composers of the past , as we explore their work and their contribution to society, past and present

Grade Five

Through song, activities, written work, games, use of classroom instruments, students begin to read, create and present songs using more complex music notation. Also, our music literacy skills continue to progress with the reading of 2 and 3 part songs we are learning in class. Students move from singing songs in unison (or one part) into part singing, both in rounds, canons, partner songs, harmony, as well as the use of counter melodies and descants.

At this age, students continue to learn a specific instrument as a class, learning the skills, techniques and learning new songs on the instrument during our music classes. During the 2019-2020 school year, students will experience learning beginning ukulele.

In Grade Five, students also continue to work on the skills they have developed in earlier years as composers and, in both small and large groups, begin to take on more complex music creations, including both melody and rhythm,

Grade Six

Through song, activities, written work, games, use of classroom instruments, students begin to read, create and present songs using more complex music notation. Also, our music literacy skills continue to progress with the reading of 2 and 3 part songs we are learning in class. In addition to expanding our work through singing, students also experiment with styles, techniques, and instruments as they create, make and present their own music, within a given set of parameters.

At this age, students continue to learn a specific instrument as a class, learning the skills, techniques and learning new songs on the instrument during our music classes. During the 2019-2020 school year, students will experience learning beginning ukulele.

In Grade Six, students also continue to work on the skills they have developed in earlier years as composers. Further expectaions include students' ability to demonstrate their technical musical vocabulary, as they compare interpretations of their own and others’ music, using appropriate terminology.
