L. E. Shaw Elementary is a Nut Free School
Some students and staff at L. E. Shaw have severe allergies to nuts and nut products. Out of respect for those for whom nuts can be life-threatening, please avoid bringing any products that contain, or may contain, nuts onto the school property.
*Please note, there are students with various allergies. Specific classrooms may have individual allergies & products that may be discouraged. This specific information will be communicated as necessary.
L. E. Shaw Elementary is a Scent Aware School
Some members of our school community have allergies and sensitivities to scents. Reactions to perfumes and scented products are as individual as the person. Common reactions are sneezing, coughing, sore throat, wheezing, and tightness in the chest. Other reactions that are not as obvious can be loss of concentration, confusion, irritability, and behavior changes.
We ask that all students, staff, volunteers and visitors to L. E. Shaw avoid wearing scents or using scented products while on the premises. The most crucial scents to remove from our school’s environment are scented markers, perfumes, colognes, strong deodorants, aftershave, body lotion and scented hair spray. The elimination of scented detergents and fabric softeners would also help decrease annoyance and severe health risk.
We want to provide the healthiest environment possible for everyone at L. E. Shaw Elementary School.
Recess and Lunch:
Pack a lunch and snacks for your child or a full cafeteria is available to purchase hot meals.
Students are encouraged to have a water bottle with them through the day
Students can sign up for recess clubs.
Labeling Student's Belongings:
As we are all aware, children can lose items quite easily, without even realizing. We strongly encourage parents/guardians to place labels inside their child's belongings, such as jackets, lunch boxes, hats, shoes, etc.
This will help us to bring the item back to the right student and will help prevent another student accidentally taking an item that does not belong to them.
Medication:
Medication can only be supplied or administered to a student by school staff if the necessary consent forms have been completed by the parent/guardian and the school. AVRCE policies in regard to the provision of medication require that:
(i) a consent form be completed that authorizes the school to administer medication; and
(ii) a record be maintained by the school of all medication that has been administered.
Student Arrival and Dismissal:
Buses start to arrive at the school by 7:45am.
Our school day begins at 8:00am. Please ensure students are on time to start their day. Morning announcements and daily routines help make the day go smoothly.
Our dismissal time begins at 2:05pm for bus students, walkers and students being picked up. Pre-primary will be dismissed between 1:50pm and 1:55pm. This allows them to get on the buses and settle before the other students come on.
All students arriving late or leaving early must check in at the office.
Transportation:
Pre-primary to Grade two students must be met at the bus stop at the end of the day. The bus driver will not leave a young child alone at the side of the road. If arrangements have not been made with the driver, the child will be brought back to the school and the parents/guardians will be contacted to pick up the student at the school.
Please contact the office at 902-542-6900 whenever there is a change in their pick-up routine. This ensures that we are able to get your child in the correct place afterschool. Bus changes can also be emailed to the school office at leses@avrce.ca.
Bus Notes:
If your child is to be travelling on another bus that is not their regular bus, please provide a bus note to the office.
There are bus checks at the end of the day to make sure each student is accounted for and on the right bus. Without the bus note or permission form the parent/guardian, the student will be directed to their regular bus.
If plans change during the day or you forget to write a note, please either email the office at leses@avrce.ca or phone 902-542-6900 to let the office know of the change. We want to make sure each student gets to where they need to be.
Student Behaviour on Buses:
The driver of the school bus has the responsibility of maintaining order and discipline on the bus. The driver has an obligation to report any problems or incidents, in writing, to the Bus Supervisor and Principal, who will then investigate the incident. If the incident is serious enough, a student's privilege of traveling on the bus may be suspended for a period of time. The Principal will notify the parents/guardians of such a suspension and their rights/responsibilities in the matter. Students are expected to remain seated on the school bus, not make excessive noise, and not indulge in behaviour which distracts the driver or is potentially harmful to the safety of other students.
