What is a Behaviour Support Teacher (BST)?
We are licensed teachers who possess a Master of Education degree in Special Education or equivalent. We have backgrounds in classroom, Learning Centre and/or Resource Support positions.
Who do Behaviour Support Teachers support?
We support implementation and programming for students on the Behaviour Specialist’s caseload. Additionally, we may support classrooms of students, if directed to do so by the Student Services Facilitator.
What do Behaviour Support Teachers do?
Each day looks different for Behaviour Support Teachers, as our role serves many functions. We support students, teachers and educational staff in many ways, such as:
Conducting the initial intake interview with school staff and observations of students referred to Behaviour Specialist
Providing preliminary, classroom-based management strategies for teachers prior to Behaviour Specialist involvement
Creating materials for individualized behaviour plans
Supporting teachers by creating individualized academic programming for students on Behaviour Specialist caseload
Supporting program implementation of both individual and whole class strategies
Supporting teacher coaching for establishing routines and expectations within the classroom
Supporting curriculum implementation strategies
Translating TIENET documents into practice
Creating/delivering PD to classroom and learning centre teachers, EPAs and administrators
Where do Behaviour Support Teachers work?
Each of the eight Behaviour Support Teachers support two School Learning Communities (SLC). We are school-based teachers, working primarily in schools, with students and teaching/educational staff under the direction of the Student Services Facilitator and in consultation with the Behaviour Specialist.
Accessing the Behaviour Support Teachers
In HRCE, schools are not able to directly refer students to Behaviour Support Teachers via TIENET. Although there is no referral process, if you would like to access our support, the school administrator (or designate) may contact their Student Services Facilitator to request specific support. BST service is prioritized by the Student Services Facilitator in consultation with the Behaviour Specialist.
