The Junior High Drama Project

What is it? The Junior High Drama Project is a supplementary funded program that will put a professional theatre artist in your school for 3 sessions (lunch hour or after school) to teach Improvisational Theatre skills. After the 3 sessions are over, all participants are invited and encouraged to attend a Community Improv Jam at a hub location where the students and facilitators will perform and play theatre games in front of an invited audience of parents and community members. This event will take place the last week in November at Cole Harbour High School.

The entire program, workshops and end of session Community Improv Jam are FREE to all participants.

What is Improvised theatre? Improv is theatre that doesn’t require a script, set or costumes. The scenes live in the imagination of the performers and audience and are discovered together at the same time.

How will the sessions look? Students will make a circle and play lots of games to teach skills. have fun, build confidence and learn about improv. It is an everyone participates, no bystanders style of workshop. No experience necessary for students or teachers. Grades 6-9 students are welcome based on school composition.

What do I need to do?

  • Contact David Zinck at dzinck@hrce.ca to show your interest.
  • Arrange a time and space for your 3 workshops (1 hour in length) at your site. A classroom where desks can be moved is fine.
  • A teacher or a principal-designate adult needs to be present to supervise/assist/participate.
  • Recruit students to participate and remind them the day before the workshops that it is happening
  • Get signed media releases for all participants

What is the timeline? Ideally we’d like to start the 3rd week of October. The deadline for an expression of interest is Friday, October 25th. There is limited funding available so the sooner expressions of interest are made the better!

Interested? Questions? We’d love to hear from you!
