Comic Book Workshop (Grades 5-8)
Do you love to write and/or draw? Learn to combine the two to create powerful comics. You will receive a hands-on, crash course in comics creation, where you will explore the techniques and stages of comic book writing. Topics include character design, simplification, panel layout and story writing. You will get a start on your own short comic, and receive feedback from a professional cartoonist.
Students will need access to pencils, paper, and erasers. We suggest students bring a black fine tip pen and a big thick black pen or marker (like a sharpie) to the sessions. A ballpoint black pen will do the trick too in a pinch. If they have any other favorite materials (colour markers, coloured pencil, iPad etc) they are more than welcome to bring them. Rulers are a bonus but not required.
Students will need to pick up printed 2 handouts for the first session (which can be picked up from their school's head office) , 2 handouts for the second session, and plain paper for sessions 5 and 6.
This Program runs Tuesday evenings, from 6-7 p.m. and it will start on November 8th and run until December 13th.
I am a visual artist and cartoonist based in Ottawa. Right now, I am completing artwork for my upcoming graphic novel, Kettle Harbour, a queer family drama set in rural Nova Scotia. I have years of experience teaching art workshops for all ages, and I am currently passionate about teaching cartooning to junior high and high school students. My education includes an MA in Art History from Queen's University (2014), specializing in Canadian Art, and a BFA from NSCAD (2010). I have also exhibited work as a painter, and sculpture/installation as part of a collective duo (NO and NO, with Gabriel Cheung).
