Multi-Genre Units

This Hyperdoc unit will take approximately 2 weeks for students to complete. The Slideshow has step-by-step teaching instructions in the speaker's notes.

This Multi-Genre unit focusing on the novel, The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton is designed to be able to be used for both in person and online learning. It contains many learning activities that explore the Essential Questions:

Why do rivalries exist and can they be resolved?

Who are the actual Outsiders?

The unit contains materials for 3 - 4 weeks of instruction.

This short unit focuses specifically on sound devices in poetry which aligns to the Framework for Summative Assessment for ELA 9. Of course, we can always appreciate different poems for different things, and there are many different ways to “attack” a poem, these particular works were selected because they contain specific sound devices.

This Hyperdoc mini-unit can be assigned over a period of 3+ classes. The articles focus on the Essential Question: Should we worry about facial recognition technology? NOTE: This unit and the ENG 11 Short Story unit on The Effects of Betrayal use the same short stories, but the approaches are different. Choose what works best in your ELA/ ENG departments.

This multi-genre unit was largely compiled from the work of Heather Marshall, aka The Book Sommelier with some additions and modifications. Students will express their ideas and positions on three big questions relating to the texts:

• What are the responsibilities of the individual, of society, and of superpowers in regard to human rights?

• Whose responsibility is it to fight for those who are being persecuted by someone or something more powerful?

• What are the consequences of being unconcerned with injustice and persecution taking place around the world?

This Hyperdoc short story unit can be assigned over a period of approximately 1 - 2 weeks in connection with The Five People You Meet in Heaven or as a stand-alone unit. The stories all focus on the Essential Question: Are we all connected? This thematic short story and poetry unit can be easily adapted for the Google Classroom. The main document contains links to the texts and learning activities. Teachers should read all of the texts to determine which ones are suitable and at an appropriate level for their students.

This is a high interest research project that focuses on poetic devices and figurative language in the context of concept albums. This learning activity could be used as a self-directed research project, or would be an interesting assignment for students to do if we were to transition to learning from home.

This Hyperdoc notebook can be used to help students share what they have learned from participating in an independent novel study. The notebook contains mini-lessons, opportunities to reflect and respond, and a sythesis assignement as a summative assessment.
