AVRCE Equity & Wellbeing
Wellbeing & Equity work in the AVRCE is about is a way of working together to create healthy, inclusive and vibrant school communities where the climate and culture, policies, practices, opportunities and physical design enable everyone to learn, grow, thrive and succeed.
This work includes creating inclusive classrooms and school communities, honouring diverse identities and lived experiences, and providing resources and support where they are most needed. Equity is not about giving everyone the same thing, it is about making sure everyone has what they need to learn, grow, and belong.
In the AVRCE, this means:
Identifying and removing barriers related to race, culture, gender identity, language, ability, socioeconomic status, or other factors that prevent people from fully participating and thriving in education.
Building a culture where every student, staff member, and family feels safe, respected, valued, and supported.
Fostering a sense of belonging so students are engaged and able to succeed.
This approach is grounded in the understanding that healthier, more inclusive schools lead to better learning outcomes. Through Healthy School Communities, also known as Health Promoting Schools, we support administrators, teachers, and staff to build on the great work already happening in schools. Schools are unique settings that strongly influence health and wellbeing, and by shaping environments through healthy food choices, opportunities for daily physical activity, positive mental wellness, and healthy relationships we create conditions for students to feel valued, supported and successful in our schools.
When all students feel safe, respected, and included, they are more engaged and able to reach their full potential. By addressing systemic barriers and fostering a culture of belonging, we help ensure that our schools reflect the diversity and strengths of our communities and prepare students to contribute to a healthier, more just and inclusive society.
The AVRCE is located in Sipekne’katik, one of the seven districts of Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People.
This land is governed by the Peace and Friendship Treaties which established ongoing relationships of respect, peace, and mutual obligation. These Treaties did not cede land, but affirmed that Mi’kmaq and settlers would live in harmony as Treaty partners.
We are all Treaty People, with a shared responsibility to uphold these agreements and share in our learning, respect, and work toward reconciliation.
We recognize that African Nova Scotians are a distinct people whose histories, legacies and contributions have enriched Nova Scotia for over 400 years. African Nova Scotians are one of Canada’s oldest and most resilient communities.
We recognize, despite these histories and legacies, our Black community and learners continue to face inequities and injustices that we (educators) are responsible for actively taking steps to correct.
In the Annapolis Valley Regional Centre for Education, every student will grow in their academic achievement, sense of identity, belonging, and personal empowerment in a supportive, student-centred, and responsive environment.
Well-Being Goal: To improve all students’ sense of identity, belonging, and engagement.
Strategy 1: In AVRCE, regional and school staff will use relational practices, to build authentic, healthy, safe relationships in the classroom and school community to improve, support and sustain students’ sense of belonging.
