My name is Yan Desormeau and I will be leading your child through the Grade 9 Math curriculum.
Course Objective
I hope to encourage and motivate students to view the world through the eyes of Math, and to ensure a successful school year in meeting the grade-level outcomes.
Course Overview
The math program presents an opportunity to continue developing literacy in mathematics as an evolving combination of the math-related attitudes, skills, and knowledge. Students will improve upon abilities in inquiry, problem-solving, and decision-making, while acquiring a greater sense of math, as it impacts the world around them.
This year will further build upon students’ foundations in: number sense, number operations, patterns, measurement, geometry, data management and probability.
Homework/Assignments
· Homework provides students with the opportunity to practice the skills learned in class and to identify concepts they need help with. Mainly homework consists of unfinished classroom practice.
· Students should be prepared to be assessed on their practice at any time.
Extra-help
· Extra help is available any time we agree on.
Assessments
· Assessment and evaluation are an essential means by which students and teachers can communicate learning, while informing teacher instruction.
· Formative assessment of student progress will be ongoing and include both informal and formal assessments such as: observation, discussions, journals, mental math, check-ins, quizzes and mini-projects.
·
Assignments will be graded using a four point scale:
Level 4
In-depth knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Able to extend the application of related skills.
Level 3+
Competent +
Level 3
Competent knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Appropriate application of the related skills.
Level 2+
Developing +
Level 2
Developing knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Developing in the application of the related skills.
Level 1+
Limited +
Level 1
Limited knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Limited application of related skills.
· Any assessment may be sent home for parent signature.
· Missed assessments must be made up either by or at lunch, the first Thursday following their return.
Methods of Communication
Students
· My teacher web page is updated weekly and includes: links, a homework page, course events, and more.
· Email: students are encouraged to email me with questions and concerns at ydesormeau@gnspes.ca
