Human Bio 11

COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course provides a second science credit, necessary for graduation. The term human biology indicates the biological systems which are present in the human body. This course concentrates on the study of the human body and its interactions with the environment. Topics covered may include: bones and muscles, diet and nutrition, cardiovascular health, the immune system, the nervous system, the reproductive system, and healthy skin. Although it is easy to separate each of these systems for study purposes, it should be remembered that these systems are interrelated. In this course, we will be studying both anatomy and physiology together, in order to give you a full appreciation and understanding of the human body.

Anatomy: the study of the many structures that make up the body.

Physiology: the study of the functions of those structures and how they work together as a system.

Each topic begins at the biological level and then looks at the personal level. It will then expand to include relevance within society as a whole.

Unit 1: Body Organization and Cells

Students will identify the characteristics of living things and discuss the levels of organization as related to humans.

Unit 2: Skin

Students will identify the structures of skin and make connections regarding its functions. Students will also investigate skin patterns, various skin care practices, skin and hair care products, and various skin disorders.

Unit 3: Skeletal and Muscular Systems

Students will identify types of bones and joints, specific bones, specific muscles, and how they function together. Students will also investigate skeletal and muscular disorders.

Unit 4: Circulatory Systems

Students will identify the structures and functions of the cardiovascular system and investigate disorders associated with these systems.

Unit 5: Digestive System and Nutrition

Students will identify the structures of the digestive system and the process of digestion. Students will also explore the relationship among balanced diet, caloric intake, and health, and will examine the influence of food labels and advertising on public health.

Unit 6: Immune System

Students will examine how their body fights against invading pathogens such as bacteria and viruses.

ASSESSMENT:

Assessment is the process of gathering, from a variety of sources, information that accurately reflects how well a student is achieving the learning outcomes in a subject or course. There are two types of assessment:

  1. Formative assessment is to show growth over time, determine student needs, plan next steps in instruction, and provide students with descriptive feedback.
  2. Summative assessment is to determine the extent to which learning has occurred for the students.

Evaluation is the process of analyzing, reflecting upon, and summarizing assessment information and making judgements and/or decisions based on the information gathered.

Students will be given multiple opportunities to meet course outcomes over the semester. In this class there will be a variety of ways that evidence of learning will be gathered. These may include: conversations, observations, quizzes, experiments/labs, models, drawings, projects, presentations, tests, and exams.

Students will be marked on outcomes using achievement levels:

Achievement Level

4

In-depth knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Able to extend the application of related skills.

3+

Competent +

3

Competent knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Appropriate application of the related skills.

2+

Developing +

2

Developing knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Developing the application of the related skills.

1+

Limited +

1

Limited knowledge and understanding of content and concepts. Limited application of related skills.

A student’s term work will make up 80% of their course mark and the final exam will be worth 20%.
