Assignment 4 Brainstorming and Choosing a Topic
With the change of syllabus, IBO would like teachers to officially collect topics from students. This change is to help students avoid poor topic choices, and give teachers an opportunity to guide students before an entire paper is written in an unproductive direction.
The assignment: Use the provided prompts (and example Mind Maps) to brainstorm some potential topics. Expand on 2 of the topics by identifying the mathematics (from the syllabus) that can be used to explore each topic. For many of you, this is your final exam and I will give you feedback. If you did not have my class for the '25-'26 school year, you may email me your topic and plan and I will give you feedback. Technically, this assignment will be due the first day of school, but please do not wait until August 10 to begin writing your IA! Everyone will have IA conferences in September.
Assignment 5 Make a Plan
There’s a saying one of my coaches uses: If you fail to plan, plan to fail. It may be a harsh reality, but it has much truth.
Make a plan that includes:
-where will your data come from (if you need data) AND how reliable is it? (By the way, it is excellent personal engagement to gather your own data)
-what tables, graphs, and/or diagrams will you include? do you know how to use the technological tools necessary to make these graphics happen? (Hand-drawn and scanned images are perfectly acceptable)
-how will you satisfy each criteria of the rubric?
The assignment: Make a plan. See details on Brainstorming document above.
Assignment 6 Write a Draft
Due on the second Thursday of school: August 20, 2026.
