AP Literature and Composition

Course Description:

This AP course is designed to engage students in the careful reading and critical analysis of imaginative literature. Through the close reading of selected texts, students deepen their understandings of literature and language. Students will consider a work’s structure, style, and themes as well as considering the author and the context.

Objectives:

Þ To give students the knowledge and skills they need in order to pass the AP exam

Þ For students to read literature in order to create connections of text to text, text to self, and text to world

Þ To promote students’ imaginative abilities in reaction to literature

Þ To help students identify and explain (through discussion and writing) the value of literature, personally, socially, culturally, academically, artistically, and historically

Þ Students will need to consider a work’s textual details and be able to identify theme, style, and structure

Requirements of the Course:

You are required to come to class prepared and to participate in discussion in a respectful and intellectual manner. As an AP class, you will engage often in discussions, you must be able to accept feedback from your peers and you must remember the importance of respecting others and keeping an OPEN MIND.

Required Materials:

To come to class prepared you must come with all of your materials: blue or black ink pens or pencils, highlighters, a 1 ½” or a 2” 3 ring binder, and the required reading. Your binder should be reserved for this class only. Your binder will be checked every nine weeks for organization and required materials. You must keep a copy of this syllabus in the front of your binder at all times.

*You are required to bring your materials to class every day.*

Grading:

Your grades will come from a fair combination of quizzes, in-class and out-of-class writing assignments, notebook organization, daily preparation, participation in discussion, papers, and tests.

Attachments:

I will post all important class documents as attachments on this page for you to download if you need them. It is important that you keep a syllabus and copy of the class procedures in your notebook for the course at all times.
