Classwork & Homework

2020-2021

From this point on please go on your google classroom for all work.

March 19, 2020

Good morning folks!

I hope you are doing well. I am attaching the link to the US Government and Civics work. Please note that these are suggested activities for you during the school closure. Mr. Smith, Mr. Mac, and myself have selected tasks that connect to our current studies of the presidential primaries/caucuses, Washington DC virtual tours, US Government, and our local government. These are NOT required and don’t need to be turned in. I have also attached a link to Gabe's blog. Gabe has been a handful today. Please take care. Know that I miss you all and I am thinking of you! Please feel free to email me if your need help, would like more resources or just need to talk.

Thinking of you all,

Ms. McKay

The Quiz for Unit 1 Lesson 2 & Unit 1 Lesson 3 on tomorrow

OCtober 2, 2019

Sit in your assigned seats & please close your chromebooks.

(sent in an email to all students last night)

Good morning,

On schoolbrains, you will see that the Quiz 1.1 and Unit 1 Lesson 1 notes/vocabulary grades have been posted. Progress reports will be opened on Friday. Please check your grade today to see your current performance level. If you complete any incomplete work you must send me an email stating what work you have completed, what you have added to that work, and your social studies block. Any adjusted work I have received by Thursday at 2:00pm I will include on the progress report. After Thursday at 2 pm, it will appear on your final term 1 grade.

I have noticed that some students have found the teacher's notes on the online textbook. These notes are to be used as an additional resource to help you understand the textbook. If you copy these into your notes into your notes it is considered plagiarism and will earn you a grade of zero as your notes must be in your own words. If you have copied the teachers' notes from the online textbook you should go back and put the notes in your own words.

You will have class time today to finish any and all of your Unit 1 Lesson 2 & 3 notes/vocabulary. Once you have completed this go to the online textbook and answer all the questions found within Unit 1 Lesson 3. This will give you a quick preview on Friday's Lesson 2 & 3 quiz. On Thursday, we will review in class Lesson 2 & 3 using a kahoot and a slideshow.

Thank you!

Sincerely,

Ms. McKay

WELCOME TO OCEAN HOUSE

US GOVERNMENT & CIVICS

ROOM 102

Ms. McKay

jmckay@gloucesterschools.com

https://sites.google.com/gloucesterschools.com/mckay-us-government-civics/home

Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies in Room 102 at O’Maley Middle School. Let me first introduce myself; I am Jennifer McKay and I was born and raised in Gloucester and attended Gloucester Public Schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. This will be my sixteenth year teaching at O’Maley Middle School and I consider myself very fortunate to be working with such a talented a dedicated group of teachers: the Ocean House staff.

I realize that teaching your student is a privilege, as well as a tremendous responsibility. I will do my best this year to ensure that each student has a safe and enjoyable learning experience in the classroom. However, I cannot do this alone: I need your help. We both need to be partners in the learning process. I need each of you to encourage your student at home by helping to ensure that they have completed their assignments, and push them to study and prepare quizzes, tests and projects. I will keep you informed of all assignments and subjects that are covered in class through my website, calendar and google drive. Thank you in advance for all your support!

Sincerely,

Jennifer McKay M.Ed. & M.A.

Extra help and after school support

I am available Wednesday after school from 2:00-2:45 pm and any morning from 7:00-7:30. For morning support please let me know at least a day in advance. I encourage students to stay. Extra help is never a punishment and snacks will be provided after school.

Expectations

The Five B’s

1. Be on time 2. Be prepared 3. Be respectful to yourself, classmates, and adults

4. Be accountable 5. Be consistent

Accountability and Independence

These are skills that we will continue to foster throughout the year. It is important to acknowledge that your son/daughter is going to be in high school next year and will need to be accountable and independent to be successful. Learning is growing and growing is learning. With this in mind we can have a very successful year together and fully anticipate a great deal of growth from your child this year. https://sites.google.com/gloucesterschools.com/mckay-us-government-civics/home

Chromebooks

We will be using Chromebooks regularly in class and it is expected that all students bring their fully charged Chromebook to class with them everyday. I will be checking chromebook charges and this will factor into the grade for this class. Chromebooks will be used for many reasons throughout the year for research, writing, collaborating, and presenting.

Global Citizenship Project

Essential Question: What right(s) do I care about? How can I make a positive impact regarding this right?

The Global Citizenship Project is an interdisciplinary project where you will explore a universal right of your choosing. You will research your topic and create a presentation of your choice that demonstrates your understanding of the human right. Your project should include specific information on places around the world and/or times in our history where that human right has BOTH been celebrated AND denied. You will also design how you can make a difference in the world regarding this right. Your presentation can be in any form that you choose: a writing piece, an experiment, a play, a video, a debate, a documentary, a powerpoint presentation, artwork, etc. You will work with Ms. McKay to create a well researched, substantial project that will be displayed on June 5 at our Global Citizenship Symposium. Your grade for this project will be 25% Social Studies Term 4 average.

Welcome to 8th Grade Social Studies in Room 102 at O’Maley Middle School. Let me first introduce myself; I am Jennifer McKay and I was born and raised in Gloucester and attended Gloucester Public Schools from Kindergarten through twelfth grade. This will be my fifteenth year teaching at O’Maley Middle School and I consider myself very fortunate to be working with such a talented and dedicated group of teachers: the Ocean House staff.

I am available Thursday after school from 2:00-3 pm and any morning from 7:00-7:30.
