Empowering School Leaders to Advance Gender Equity
Empowering School Leaders to Advance Gender Equity
While substantial progress has been made toward universal primary education—over two-thirds of countries have achieved gender parity in primary school enrollment—significant gaps persist. In low-income countries, only 78% of girls are enrolled in primary school, compared to a global average of 88%. The disparity widens at the secondary level, where girls’ enrollment in low-income countries is just 31%, far below the global average of 66%.
School leaders are uniquely positioned to promote gender equity, not only within their schools but across their communities. Through policy-making, inclusive teaching practices, and meaningful collaboration with families and communities, they can help create safe and equitable learning environments for all students.
Brave Leadership, Safe Schools is a free resource set—including a storybook, guidebook and rubric—designed to support school leaders in this work. Featuring real-life stories from the Global South, it offer practical activities, facilitation tips, and inspiring narratives that bring gender equity to life.
Resources are also available in Spanish.
Developed in collaboration with Heroínas Peruanas, this storybook features the voices of 10 school leaders—both men and women—from Asia, Latin America, and Africa. Through powerful, real-life accounts, these leaders share how they’ve advanced gender equity in their schools, detailing the strategies they used and the impact they’ve made in their communities.
How were these stories selected? We reached out to dozens of school leaders and conducted more than 15 in-depth interviews. From these conversations, we selected stories that not only inspire but also highlight practical, transferable strategies school leaders can use to promote gender equity across diverse educational settings.
Designed for organizations working with school leaders, the guidebook offers practical activities, sample session plans, and facilitation tools to help foster gender-equitable school environments.
This rubric can be used to assess how well school leadership materials incorporate gender equity principles. It can identify gaps, highlight strengths, and provide a path to more gender-equitable models.
