Global Eyecare Academy is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing eyecare education while improving access to vision care in underserved communities in the United States and Mexico. Through supervised training, screening, and surgical partnerships, we address preventable vision loss where the need is greatest.
We believe education and access go hand in hand. Our programs are designed to provide meaningful, hands-on learning for students while delivering ethical, supervised care to communities with limited access to eye services. By working alongside experienced clinicians, students gain exposure to pathology and care models that strengthen training and improve long-term outcomes.
Children & Early Vision
Early screening and intervention help protect vision during critical developmental years, reducing lifelong visual impairment.
Glasses & Eyecare Access
Providing eyeglasses and basic optical care enables patients to learn, work, and function more fully in daily life.
Education & training
We remove barriers so optometry students and students interested in ophthalmology can gain supervised, hands-on experience in high-need settings.
Surgery & Advanced Care
Through partnerships with local ophthalmologists, we support cataract surgery and advanced care that restores sight and independence.
Early childhood is a critical period for visual development. Undetected vision problems can affect learning, behavior, and long-term visual outcomes.
Global Eyecare Academy supports school-based vision screenings to identify children who may have uncorrected refractive errors or other vision concerns. These screenings help detect issues early, before they interfere with academic performance or development.
When children are identified as needing vision correction, we work to provide eyeglasses to those who otherwise would not have access, helping ensure that visual barriers do not limit their ability to learn and participate fully in school.
Our approach emphasizes:
Early identification through school screenings
Appropriate referral when further evaluation is needed
Providing glasses to children who need them
Collaboration with educators and local eye-care professionals
By addressing vision early, we help support both educational success and long-term eye health.
Clear vision is essential for daily functioning, independence, and overall quality of life. For many individuals, however, access to basic eye examinations and corrective lenses remains limited.
Global Eyecare Academy provides free vision clinics that focus on identifying visual needs and improving access to eye care services. We hold monthly clinics in Puerto Peñasco in partnership with Rocky Point Medical Clinic and Palabras de Esperanza, creating a consistent point of access for patients in the community.
In addition, we participate in larger, high-volume clinics in collaboration with VOSH Arizona, VOSH Sonora, and the Rotary Club Pitic of Hermosillo, allowing us to reach a broader patient population and address more complex needs.
During these clinics, patients receive comprehensive evaluations that include:
Vision assessment and refractive evaluation
Screening for glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy
Identification of patients who may benefit from surgical care
When indicated, we provide free eyeglasses based on the patient’s prescription, helping remove a common and immediate barrier to functional vision. Patients who require additional treatment or surgery are identified and referred for appropriate follow-up care.
Through these efforts, we aim to improve access to vision correction while ensuring that patients with more advanced eye disease are recognized and connected to the care they need.
Hands-on clinical experience is essential to training compassionate, skilled eye-care professionals. Exposure to diverse pathology, supervised patient care, and continuity of experience strengthen both clinical judgment and professional development.
Global Eyecare Academy provides structured educational opportunities for students from multiple institutions, including AZCOPT, University of Arizona Phoenix Ophthalmology residents (University of Arizona Tucson), AZCOM, and Creighton University medical students. These programs are designed to complement formal training while emphasizing ethical care and close supervision.
Students participate directly in:
Vision screening and refractive assessment
Pre-operative and post-operative patient care
Observation in the operating room
Clinical decision-making in low-resource settings
These experiences enable students to develop practical skills and learn to adapt care delivery to resource-constrained environments.
A defining feature of our model is longitudinal engagement. Students may return multiple times, allowing them to build long-term relationships with patients, local clinicians, and community partners, and to see the outcomes of care over time.
In addition to recurring clinics, students can also participate in higher-volume, week-long clinical programs, where they gain experience in managing increased patient flow while maintaining quality and professionalism.
Through supervised, hands-on participation, Global Eyecare Academy helps prepare students to deliver thoughtful, patient-centered care across a wide range of clinical settings.
For many patients, vision loss from conditions such as cataracts, glaucoma, and pterygium is treatable, yet access to surgical care remains limited due to cost, infrastructure, and availability of trained providers.
Global Eyecare Academy supports sight-restoring and vision-preserving surgical care through close collaboration with local ophthalmologists, including Dr. Swanson, who provides access to his operating room. These partnerships allow surgeries to be performed in a controlled, professional environment while strengthening local care capacity.
Surgical services include:
Cataract surgery
Glaucoma procedures to reduce intraocular pressure and preserve remaining vision
Pterygium surgery to restore ocular surface health and visual function
Surgical programs are supported through a combination of in-kind donations from industry partners, including Alcon, and direct financial support from Global Eyecare Academy. Together, these resources help cover surgical supplies, equipment use, and procedural costs, reducing barriers for patients who otherwise would not have access to care.
Global Eyecare Academy coordinates logistics and perioperative support, and in partnership with Palabras de Esperanza, helps ensure appropriate post-operative follow-up and continuity of care.
Surgeries are performed by experienced ophthalmic surgeons who are part of Global Eyecare Academy or have been vetted by the organization. Local surgeons have also participated, reinforcing collaboration and shared standards of care.
We additionally support the training of surgeons in supervised settings, including participation by surgeons in training under the direct supervision of experienced ophthalmologists. As part of our educational mission, we aim to expand instruction in manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS), a technique well suited to high-volume and resource-limited environments.
Through these efforts, Global Eyecare Academy works to restore and preserve vision while contributing to sustainable surgical education and local capacity building.
All Global Eyecare Academy programs emphasize:
Supervised, mentored student training
Ethical, patient-centered care
Collaboration with local clinicians
Exposure to high-volume pathology uncommon in typical U.S. training settings
This approach strengthens education while ensuring patients receive appropriate, high-quality care.
Support for Global Eyecare Academy helps sustain education, expand access, and maintain long-term partnerships that benefit both students and patients.
