Our work is structured as a continuous, integrated pathway from screening through follow-up care rather than as isolated activities. We give continuous care throughout the year by working with local partners and performing monthly clinics. From community vision screenings that identify refractive errors and eye disease to individuals requiring additional evaluation or surgery. We offer comprehensive eye services including glasses, medical treatment, and surgical care.
Sustainable impact requires collaboration with local clinicians and organizations. We partner with trusted ophthalmologists, including Dr. Swanson, who provides access to his operating room and clinic, allowing surgeries to be performed in a professional and controlled environment. We also work closely with community partners such as Rocky Point Medical Clinic, Palabras de Esperanza, VOSH Arizona, VOSH Sonora, and the Rotary Club Pitic to coordinate screenings, clinics, and follow-up care.
Hands-on experience is a cornerstone of eyecare education. Students as well as residents from Midwestern University, University of Arizona, Mayo Clinic, and Creighton University participate in supervised clinical activities that complement their formal training. We provide an opportunity to hone clinical skills and experience work in eyecare. In addition, we aim to build a community and culture among the students geared towards service. Students and residents may return to the same communities multiple times, allowing them to build long-term relationships with patients, fellow participants, and local partners and to participate in both recurring clinics and higher-volume, week-long programs.
Vision-threatening conditions, including cataracts, glaucoma, and pterygium, often require surgical intervention. Global Eyecare Academy supports surgical care through partnerships with local ophthalmologists and designated surgical facilities.
Surgical programs are made possible through in-kind donations from industry partners, including Alcon, combined with direct financial support from Global Eyecare Academy. We also coordinate logistics and perioperative support, and work with Palabras de Esperanza to help ensure post-operative follow-up.
Surgeries are performed by experienced, vetted surgeons, with opportunities for surgeons in training to participate under direct supervision as in the United States. We aim to expand training in manual small-incision cataract surgery (MSICS), a technique well suited to high-volume and resource-limited settings.
Long-term impact depends on more than a single encounter. After screenings or surgery, we work with community partners to help patients access appropriate follow-up care, monitor outcomes, and coordinate referrals when additional treatment is needed. By linking screening, treatment, surgery, and follow-up, we promote sustained visual health rather than episodic care.
Our approach is grounded in ethical practice, patient safety, and responsible stewardship of donated resources. We uphold clinical standards that protect patients while supporting meaningful educational experiences for participants.
Global Eyecare Academy’s approach is holistic, collaborative, and sustainable—integrating education, clinical care, and long-term partnerships to improve vision and train future eye-care professionals.
