We believe it is our role, as the LRC director and Technology Facilitator of Henking Elementary School to be an extension of the classroom and to be an integral part of the total educational team to help prepare students to become responsible citizens in a changing global society. Our roles and responsibilities as a teacher, instructional partner, informational specialist and program administrator should promote the school and district’s goals for student achievement. We need to facilitate collaborative opportunities and assistance to teachers as well as provide learning activities to students that are integrated into the curriculum and that will help all students achieve information literacy. As the LRC director and Technology Facilitator, We need to be a powerful educational partner in providing an integrative curriculum that prepares students for success in the twenty-first century.
Infuse technology to advance teaching and learning to help students develop the dispositions for self-directed learning, Critical Thinking/Problem Solving, Creativity, Evaluation/Reflection
“The purpose of the school Library Resource Center is to aid in the fulfillment of the instructional goals and objectives of the school. The goal is to promote this through a planned program of acquisition, organization, dissemination and education about information materials and technology to expand the learning environment of all students. The school Library Media Center functions as a vital instrument in the education process, not as a separate entity isolated from the school program but totally integrated into the teaching and learning.”

“Flexible scheduling is the practice of scheduling classes into the Learning Resource Center at the time of need. It is accomplished through mutual planning by the teacher and the Technology Facilitator/LRC Director. Thus the schedule changes weekly or even daily. Classes may be scheduled into the LRC for more than one day at a time. Students may also be sent to the center in small groups or individually.”
It’s All about student learning…
“Research has shown that students retain more learning and are better able to apply it when skills are taught in a meaningful context rather than in isolation. If a class comes to the Library Media Center at a point in instruction when use of resources naturally fits into the teaching plan, students will learn and practice skills in a real situation.”
The American Library Association (ALA) and District 34’s educational philosophy is that the library media program should be fully integrated into the educational program. This integration strengthens the teaching/learning process so that students can develop the vital skills necessary to locate, analyze, evaluate, interpret, and communicate info. and ideas.
Flexible scheduling allows students, teachers, and the LRC to become partners in learning, the LRC is an extension of the classroom, info. skills are taught and learned within the context of the classroom curriculum
Flexible Access Allows Opportunities for:
To facilitate scheduling formal and informal visits to the story corner, iWonder Lab, instructional and checkout areas the online Resource Reservation System is available on our school’s website to reserve the space and resources you need. Teachers sign up for four weeks at a time, the current week and three weeks in advance.
To reserve your time/resource you can sign-up on any Internet connected device. Please login to the Resource Reservation System and select the resource needed. Include your name/grade and a short description of what curriculum link you would like us to touch upon during your visit.
The schedule is divided into 5-minute intervals. Please sign up for at least 20 minutes for book checkout. If you sign up for a time on short notice, please notify the LRC staff asap so that we are prepared for your visit.
Using the Resource Reservation System online, you may sign up for the Technology Facilitator for individual or help within your classroom. In the description section of the form, write your name and curricular focus you are seeking help with.
Every classroom should be equipped with a SMARTboard, speakers, DVD/VCR, LCD projector, and document reader. Use the Resource Reservation System for checking out additional equipment such as digital video cameras, digital cameras, wearable digital cameras, digital microscopes, portable LCD projectors, external DVD players and the cordless microphone. Please be sure to return equipment as soon as you are finished so that it is available for others to use. For security reasons, all equipment is housed in the LRC and must be returned nightly by 4 p.m. Please see any of the LRC staff to help you with an item. Please do not “loan” equipment to another staff member without letting us know in the LRC so we may check it out to that person. The LRC staff is always willing to assist with the delivery and setup of equipment. Remember to reserve our time to deliver/pickup equipment.
Rachel can request materials for you from the Glenview Public Library. Books are loaned for a 5-week period and may be renewed for 1 additional week (Provided the request is made before they are overdue!). Up to 40 books can be loaned at a time. Non-books such as videos, pre-school kits, and CD’s are loaned for a one-week period. Rachel Davidson and the principal are the only authorized staff members who can check out materials on the Henking School Library Card.
All materials available in our Alexandria data system are bar-coded. They are either part of the permanent LC collection or Professional Collection which includes E/LA (English/Language Arts), SS (Social Studies), LS (Life Skills), Science and professional learning materials.
All bar-coded materials are inventoried on an annual basis. Therefore, we ask that you keep good track of them! You are responsible for all lost items that have been checked out to your staff account. Remember, if you share materials with a fellow teacher the materials are checked out to you! Also, it helps if you are able to locate the bar-coded materials easily. Items that are checked out of the LRC are for a three-week loan period. If you have a particular item that you could use year round you should purchase the item from your team budget.
Having a connection with the community is a valuable component of teaching. The Internet brings the world into our classroom to provide students with opportunities that normally would not be obtainable.
The Parent Calendar is listed on our homepage. It gives a snapshot of the activities offered to our students.
Students, Families & Staff Links offer additional resources for community members to find out more information about our school and it’s curriculum along with resources to enhance teaching.
In this area you will find the link, Classroom Websites. It offers access to every Classroom/Teacher’s WebPage. You can help by keeping your webpage up to date with newsletters, photos, blogs and links to interesting information from your classroom.
Please bring any AV equipment that is housed in the classroom to the LRC for repair or replacement.
The “Help Desk” is a district wide system to electronically submit needs as they arise. Please submit a “Help Desk” ticket when repairs to your computer are needed. You can access the “Help Desk” through Henking School’s website.
If you wish to check out an item and there is no staff available, please use the Manual Check-Out Sheet on the circulation counter to write down your name and the barcode of the book(s) and we will check it out to you.
Please send down student books daily to the LRC by 9:15 am.
Encourage students to keep their books in their backbacks when they're not reading them.
