Congratulations to GRHS student Daphne Wallace, whose self-portrait (pictured right) was selected to be a part of FRESH PERSPECTIVES 2024, a juried high school exhibition hosted by the Morris Museum.  

A total of 50 works from NJ high school students will hang in the museum from March 15 through May 26

Congrats to GRHS Senior Ethan Stein whose poem has been accepted to the March 2024 issue of Albricias sponsored by AATSP! The American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese is a publication at the national level and Ethan's work was chosen from hundreds of entries.

Congratulations to 9th grader Jude Rothman, whose audition this past weekend earned him a spot in the NJ Region 1 Concert Band. 

Jude received the highest score in North Jersey and will represent GR as 1st-chair euphonium in the Region Band concert in March!

Congratulations to Ms. Zhang (center to the left), who is the New Jersey Chinese Teachers Association, “Educator of the Year.” Also recognized at the ceremony this weekend were Robert Ness (left), who received NJCT’s President’s Volunteer Service Award, and Yuki Kishimoto (right), who received the President’s Youth Leadership Award.  

Congratulations to the new members of National Chinese Honor Society and of National Youth Scholar Excellence in Chinese, as well as all the award winners! 

The 1st Silk Road International Youth Photography and Short Video Competition was held from June to October in 2002, sponsored by 21st-Century Maritime Cooperation Committee, hosted by Fuzhou People’s Association for Friendship with Foreign Countries, which is a platform to enhance exchanges and communication and promote mutual understanding and friendship between the youth around the globe. The competition with the theme of  "History and Culture Around Me" serves as a window to showcase achievements in conservation of cultural heritage made by countries around the world. There are many schools from 32countries of 5 continents participating in the event. GRHS won the excellent Unit Award because more than 30 students in GRHS participated in the event from both the photo classes and Chinese II to AP classes. Our Students submit their pictures and videos taken in the summer or in the past to explain the culture related to it. The picture shows some of the current AP class students holding the award Plaque. 

Congratulations to GRHS Spanish teacher Senora Dessipris who was selected to be part of the 2024 NEA Foundation’s Global Learning Fellowship program! She is  the first teacher in the nation representing World Languages at the High School level since the program started in 2012.

GRHS senior Mia Bressler's essay "Free Returns Aren't as Free as We Think" was awarded a Runner-Up in this year's NY Times student editorial contest. This year there were more than 12,000 entries, so this is quite an honor! Mia is recognized (along with the other winners) here

Glen Ridge Middle School students were honored with TWO awards at the Foxy Awards for theatre excellence in NJ at Montclair State University. Their production of FAME received a High Superior Scoring Award and a Costume Design Award! In all, the MS production was nominated for ten awards! Great job!

On Sunday the Engineering club competed in the second annual David Good 3D Printed Bridge Competition at NJIT.  All 7 students were excellent in their presentation to the judges, and they gained a learning experience in Civil engineering.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Nelson, who won 3rd place in the World Language 9-12 Group A 2023 National Chinese Chinese Speech contest. There were 1,420 students from more than 300 teachers in 39 states who participated in this competition 2023. Amazing work, Elizabeth!

Congratulations to Claire Liotta who took home first place this weekend at the NJ Regional Shakespeare Recitation Competition. Claire will now move on to the national level in April. Go Claire!

Congratulations to Jonathan Dai and Sam Gilpin who competered in the USFA Junior Olympics competition in Denver, Colorado. Go Ridgers! 


GRHS Band Members with the Caldwell Honor Band at Caldwell University!


Three GRHS seniors had the amazing opportunity to perform with the Caldwell Honor Band in December. Within the full orchestra are seniors Eli Fellus (alto sax), Andrew Guardiola (tenor sax), and Lila Sargent (clarinet) who were selected alongside the best high school musicians in Essex County to represent Glen Ridge in the Honor Band. GRHS is proud!

GRHS junior Julian Novoa recently placed first at a very prestigious singing competition at Rutgers University, the Doris Lenz Festival for High School Students, sponsored and promoted by the National Association of Teachers of Singing, NJ Chapter. Dozens of students from all over the state auditioned before teaching judges accredited to the national association, and performed three songs each from their repertoire. Julian placed first in the Tenor/Baritone/Bass Musical Theatre category. Amazing work, Julian!

549 students from 37 states have participated in the National Chinese Language Contest since February 2022. Kira Walshe, a GRHS sophomore and Evan Rossi, a senior, advanced into the final competition after passing the geral screening and semi-final. During the final competition on  April 9th-10th, Kira won the honorable mention at the intermediate high to advanced low group A  and Evan Rossi won the 2nd place out of the final 10 participants at the intermediate high to advanced low group B. Congrats to both students on this great achievement!

The annual New York Times Contest has concluded and once again GR has shown to be talented. Of the nearly 4,000 entries received from young people from around the world, the judges selected nine winners, 15 runners-up and 25 honorable mentions. Congratulations to Eric Bennett-Sines for achieving Runner-Up status for his review of Blonde, Frank Ocean's album and to Poorvi Sarkar for achieving Honorable Mention for her review "Never Will I Ever: Toying With Representation”. Nice work, young critics!


Big congratulations to 9th grader Maxine Holleran who won the October Vocabulary contest! In the contest students were asked to take two words of the day and create a sentence. Her name and winning sentence was published on the NY Times Learning Network site (linked here and to the right).  

Congratulations to GRHS's 2022 National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists: Mia Ehatamm, Shoh Nishino, Tyler Johnson, and Evan Rossi.



Congratulations to the GRHS Marching Band who competed at the USBands Open Class National Championships in MetLife Stadium on Saturday, November 6 and were crowned Group 1 National Champions! This is the first time GRMB has won in MetLife in 20+ years.  An amazing accomplishment for an amazing team. Good work, Marching Band and Dr. Gage!

Congratulations to GRHS Junior Allie Zweig for winning "Best in Show" at the Annual Congressional Art Competition hosted by Congressman Payne.

Her photograph (attached) will hang in the Capitol Building in Washington D.C. for one year. This is an honor bestowed on 435 students in total each year - one student to represent each of the congressional districts of the United States. Her image is titled "Slow Shutter Swings". 

Further recognition goes to four other GR students that placed in the event.

A big congratulations to senior Josie Lang won an Honorable Mention in the NY Times Critical Review Contest. There were over 4,100 submissions and the judges selected 11 winners, 17 runners-up and 28 honorable mentions. GRHS students recently took part in the NY Times Vocabulary Video contest. Of the approximately 1300 participants in the contest, two GRHS student videos placed!


Juniors Ethan Stein, Hannah Fertig and Ava Handler won Runner-Up for their video: Levitate. 


Honorable Mention went 9th Graders Ruby Avellanet and Melina Conomos: Coercion
