Themes

We explore a total of four themes with students during their Kindergarten year: All About Me, All About Us, All About Our School and Community, and All About Our World. Learn more below!

All About Me

During the months of September and October we will explore the thematic unit "All About Me."

We will focus on learning and sharing information about ourselves. Each student will complete a project to present to the class with information about himself/herself including interests and favorite things. Students will begin to see that there are similarities and differences between themselves and others and that everyone is unique and special.

Questions we will explore:

  • What do good learners do?
  • How do I keep myself healthy and safe?
  • What are my rights and responsibilities?
  • How do the seasons and weather affect me?
  • What makes me unique?

All About Us

During the months of November and December we will explore the thematic unit "All About Us."

We will learn about our families, friends and classmates. Students will complete a project about their families to share with the class. We will make class graphs to compare some of our favorite things. Students continue to examine and appreciate the similarities and differences between themselves and others as they learn to work with others effectively at school and at home.

Questions we will explore:

  • How do I learn with others?
  • How do I keep myself healthy and safe at home?
  • What are my rights and responsibilities as a part of my family and class?
  • How do the seasons and weather affect my family?
  • How are families and friends alike and different?

All About Our School & Community

During the months of January and February we will explore the thematic unit "All About Our School and Community."

We will focus on learning about our school and our hometown of Glastonbury. We will discuss the different people who work in our school and our town and the importance of their unique roles. Each of us will complete a project in which we visit a site in Glastonbury and then present information about where we visited, what we can do at that place and who we would see working there.

Questions we will explore:

  • What are important things I learn about my school and community?
  • How do I interact with others so I feel healthy and safe?
  • What are my rights and responsibilities as a part of my school and community?
  • How do the seasons and weather affect my school and community?
  • What are the roles of different people in my school and community?

All About Our World

During the months of March and April we will explore the thematic unit "All About Our World."

We will focus on the ways we learn about our world including different skills and resources. We will discuss ways that our actions affect our world with an emphasis on promoting a healthy environment. We will look at ourselves as members of a world community and talk about how we can act responsibly.

Questions we will explore:

  • What resources can I use to learn about the world around me?
  • How can my actions promote a healthy environment?
  • How can I be a responsible member of my world community?
  • How do the seasons and weather affect my world?
  • How are people, places and things alike and different around the world?
