Classroom Update

When school begins, we will get to know each other during a variety of fun activities. We will get to know each other and will work on learning our class routines. Your child will also be assessed in reading and math in September once they have adjusted back to the school routine.

Reader's and Writer's Workshop

We will launch Reader's and Writer's Workshop. Students will learn the tools and routines they use to work productively and respectfully as members of their classroom reading and writing communities. They will set goals to build their skills and independence.

Math

In math we will begin Unit 1, Place Value with Large Numbers. Students will extend their understanding of the base-ten system. Students will understand multi-digit numbers(up to 1,000) written in base ten notation, recognizing that the digits in each place represent amounts of thousands, hundreds, tens, or ones (ex. 853 is 8 hundreds + 5 tens + 3 ones).

Social Studies

Our social studies curriculum is organized around the five themes of history, geography, civics, economics, and culture. In 2nd grade students begin their study of these themes by exploring the structure and purpose of a variety of communities.

Science

In science we will be studying Earth: Our Changing Planet over the coming months. Students will use information and models to identify and represent the shapes and kinds of land and bodies of water in an area and where water is found on Earth. Students will apply their understanding of the idea that wind and water can change the shape of land to compare design solutions to slow or prevent such change.
