Suggestions for Supporting your Child

On this website you will see suggestions for helping your child learn and achieve. Look in the "School-to Home Connection" section of each monthly news page. Please take a few minutes to read through these monthly pages so you will know what your child is learning and how you can help.

Home to School Folder/Homework

Each night (Monday-Thursday) your child will bring home their purple homework folder. Please check it daily for important notices and homework assignments. On most nights, homework will consist of a math or language arts worksheet to tie into our lesson for the day. This assignment is extra practice and will help me check for understanding. Please assist your child read the directions and answer any questions they may have. A homework routine is important in Second Grade. If your child is having any difficulty with homework, please send it back to school with a note to let me know. I will revisit the homework at school.

Students in Second Grade should read 20 minutes nightly and record in their Reading Log. The Reading Log should be filled out nightly and returned to school the following day. Additionally, students are expected to practice their spelling words/phonic principle each night.

Snack

We will have a snack in the morning at around 10:00. Please be sure to send in a healthy snack labeled with your child's name. Please pack it separately from their lunch box. Snacks are kept in the classroom so students do not need to visit their locker. We are a NUT-FREE classroom, so please make sure your child's snack is safe.

Behavior Expectations

Individual Behavior Plan

Our classroom behavior system is tied to Hopewell's four behavior pillars: Responsible, Respectful, Safe, and Caring. Each student begins the day with 5 cubes. Students will receive one warning. After a warning, if a student makes a choice that does not follow the expectations of Hopewell School and our classroom, they will loose a cube. Students also have an individual sticker chart on their desk. Once they fill they chart, they can earn a reward of their choice from our classroom rewards.

Marble Jar

Our class will work together to fill a marble jar with whole class appropriate behavior. During transitions and when students are expected to work quietly, the class will earn marbles if the whole class is working well together. The class can work together being responsible, respectful, safe, and caring. When the class fills the jar, the class will have a special reward. Rewards may include extra recess or a pajama day.

Birthdays

We love to recognize birthdays in school! As part of our healthy eating initiative, I ask that you choose a non-food option for recognizing your child’s birthday. One suggestion is for your child to donate a book to our classroom library. We will include your child's name inside with a special sticker and will be kept on display in our classroom library. As a class, we will make a birthday book for your child to take home. Summer birthdays will be celebrated towards the end of the school year.
