Excel Classes
For more information about Excel, please visit the Glastonbury PACE tab under District Links.
The EXCEL Program
EXCEL classes are part of an enrichment program for students in grades 3-6 who demonstrate outstanding performance on district-wide criteria including assessments of mathematics.
The mission of the program is to enhance the educational experience by facilitating learning challenges that extend and enrich the regular curriculum. Enrichment is also a integrated part of classroom instruction.
EXCEL classes do not provide an acceleration of the mathematics curriculum.
Excel Reminders
Excel candidates, currently in grades 2 and 4, take a Tomag assessments in April and May.
Please do not refer to the Tomag assessment as the PACE Test. The PACE department uses multiple criteria and assessments to learn what we can about every student, so that we may provide the appropriate support and challenge each student needs.
The majority of assessments used to identify students for the next year's Excel groups occur in the classroom and are given to all students. PACE teachers review the data we gather over the summer and assess new students in September.
As a result, parents of EXCEL candidates will receive a notification regarding their child and Excel in the early October.
EXCEL groups are flexible and may differ from year to year. As such, students are reassessed each year using district assessments common to all students.
New students to the district are evaluated to provide the appropriate level challenge or support, which may include participation in an EXCEL group.
