The following scholarship deadlines have been extended to April 30th:
So far, no applicants for the Richie Thomas Award, Genevieve Milkie Scholarship, McCready Family Scholarship, Robert E. and Theodore R. Shahade Scholarship, or Ryan Carosi Memorial Scholarship. Only one applicant was received for the Johnstown Football Reunion Association Scholarship, and the Robert B. and Frances C. Hornick Scholarship.
JHS Seniors are able to apply for the following scholarships offered by Greater Johnstown High School:
Mike Smith Education Scholarship ($1000) - This scholarship is awarded to a senior who plans to major in Science Education. If there is no Science education major then the committee will select a senior majoring in Science related field. And if no Science related field majors then it will go to any Education major.
Margaret Mekis ($500) - Provides a graduating senior with a scholarship to attend a two or four year post-secondary accredited institution of their choice. The recipient of the scholarship will be a student who shows fairness in dealing with peers, shows a willingness to serve others, and demonstrates a strong work ethic. Paper application provided. Selection shall be determined by the school district committee.
Marlene Sipe ($2500) - Provides a scholarship for a deserving senior from Greater Johnstown High School with unmet financial need who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown. Selection shall be determined by the school district committee.
Jan Bala Anthony ($500) - The recipient shall be a senior at Greater Johnstown High School who is pursuing a post-secondary education, and is intending to major in education with a concentration in English.
Class of 1950 ($200) - The purpose of the Fund shall be to provide an annual scholarship to a deserving senior of Greater Johnstown High School who plans to further his or her education in post-secondary studies (college, trade or technical school). The student must carry a C or better grade average and exhibit financial dire need.
Class of 1955 ($500) - The recipient shall be a student graduating from Greater Johnstown High School in good academic standing and who participates in community service and has unmet financial need.
Class of 1957 ($250) - Provides a $250.00 annual scholarship for a senior student at Greater Johnstown Area High School who will be attending either the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown or Pennsylvania Highlands Community College. The winner must have a GPA of at least 3.0 or higher and demonstrate financial need. No application necessary. Selection shall be determined by the school district committee using their knowledge of the student body.
Class of 1959 ($500) - Provides a scholarship for the Greater Johnstown High School class salutatorian as long as they are attending an accredited post-secondary institution of learning, not limited to a college or university.
Dibuono-Gallucci ($200) - The recipient shall be a student graduating from Greater Johnstown High School whose actions typify the friendship toward others that Ron DiBuono and Don Gallucci exhibited during their school, athletic and professional careers, and especially towards each other. In selecting a student it is the families’ wishes that the student be involved with school and outside activities and be a well-rounded-person who is caring toward others.
Dr. Melleky ($500) - In memory of Dr. John Melleky, a lifelong teacher and administrator of the Greater Johnstown School District. Provides a scholarship for student at GJHS who resides in the Oakland, Walnut Grove, or Stonycreek Township area who is pursuing a college education and demonstrates financial need and academic potential.
Ron Rivera ($1000) - The selected student will be a graduating senior of Greater Johnstown High School intending to major in the field of business.
Loretta Stumpo ($500) - The recipient shall be a student who:
- Plans to attend an accredited a four year college or university to study education
- Has financial need as determined by the school
- Provides the guidance office with a written paragraph on the subject “Why I want to make a career in education.”
- In the event of multiple candidates, the guidance office shall recommend a preferred candidate.
Steve Terebus ($220) - The recipient of this scholarship should be in good scholastic standing, have a demonstrated talent in some form of athletics, be in need of financial help and intend to further his or her education following high school.

Other scholarships available:
Richie Thomas Memorial Scholarship ($250) - Provides funding for students pursuing careers in social work, counseling, treatment, or anything that supports addiction recovery. This award is given in memory of Richie Thomas, who helped his friend find support while in recovery from addiction.
Genevieve Milkie Scholarship ($500) - Provides a scholarship for a student pursuing voice study, music education, or related field from Greater Johnstown School District, Westmont Hilltop School District, or a member of St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Johnstown.
McCready Family Scholarship Fund ($1,000 -$250 a year for 4 years) - Provides a scholarship award to a high school graduate from Cambria, Somerset or Bedford county who plans to pursue an academic degree relating to communications at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown.
Robert E. and Theodore R. Shahade Scholarship Fund ($1,800 per year for four years) - This scholarship fund was created to provide a minimum of one annual scholarship award to a student who plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown campus. Eligible applicants:
- Must be a resident of the Greater Johnstown region.
- Applicants must be a graduating senior from either Greater Johnstown High School or Westmont Hilltop High School OR a member of the St. Mary Antiochian Orthodox Christian Church in Johnstown, PA, with priority preference given to the church member.
- Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
- Have financial need.
Ryan Carosi Memorial Scholarship ($500) - Provides a scholarship for a graduating senior from Greater Johnstown High School who will be pursuing postsecondary vocational or technical education.
Johnstown Football Reunion Association Scholarship ($1000) - Provides financial aid to graduates of Greater Johnstown High School who participated in the football program as either a player, manager, or trainer, and who intend to obtain a post-secondary degree or post-secondary certificate from accredited educational institutions, with a preference being given to students of Pennsylvania accredited educational institutions.
Robert B. and Francis C. Hornick Family Scholarship ($500) - Application requirements include:
- A graduating senior
- Proof of acceptance to any campus in any program of the University of Pittsburgh - Grade point average of 3.0 or better (based on a 4.0 system)
- Essay of your choice or submit an essay that has already been written for a school assignment, a College application, or a research paper but should be a work of which you are proud and reflective of your ability to write in a well-organized and insightful manner. In other words, you do not have to compose another essay for this application, but please do also indicate on the essay the purpose for which it was written.
Wilfred, Jr. and Karen (Carter) Brandon Scholarship ($2,000 ($1,000 for freshman year and $1,000 for sophomore year if winner maintains a 3.0 GPA) - Provides a deserving African-American student with financial support during their first and second years of college. This award will honor students who excel in the classroom, model admirable leadership, and serve their community. Eligible applicants must have attained a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.0 on an unweighted scale and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or better during their first year of college. A personal statement of 750 words must be submitted, demonstrating the candidate’s leadership abilities, community involvement, and service. (Due May 10, 2020)
