Kindergarten progress reports are sent home every 6 weeks. Students are graded on a 1, 2, or 3 scale. These “I can statements” are end of year goals for Kindergarten students. They also reflect what you will see on your child’s progress reports at the end of each trimester.
Basic Kindergarten Skills
I can identify colors.
I can say my address.
I can say my phone number.
I can say my birthday.
I can cut, glue, and zip by myself.
Phonemic Awareness
I can tell if two words rhyme. (cat/bat = yes)
I can name words that rhyme. (cat/___/___)
I can clap syllables. (Chap/el/field = 3 syllables)
I can name capital and lowercase letters.
I can name letter sounds.
I can read sight words.
I can blend sounds to say a word. (c/a/t = cat)
I can segment words to say the sounds. (cat = c/a/t)
Reading
I can read the pictures of books.
I can reread books to myself.
I can point under every word when I read.
I can use strategies to help me read books.
I can retell a story.
I can name and compare the characters,
settings, and major events in stories.
Writing
I can tell a story.
I can write a story using pictures and words.
I can use spaces between words.
I can capitalize the first word in a sentence and the pronoun “I”.
I can recognize and name end punctuation.
I can reread my own writing.
Mathematics
I can sort and compare objects by color, shape, and size.
I can read, write, and compare numbers to 20.
I can count to 100 by 1s and 10s.
I can count two groups and tell which has more and which has less.
I can name and describe 2D and 3D shapes.
I can combine groups of objects to add.
I can separate groups of objects to subtract.
I can use objects to help me solve an addition and subtraction problem.
I can quickly add and subtract within 5.
