Prayer

What is prayer? How am I supposed to pray? If God already knows everything, why do I need to pray? These are real questions that you might have asked. Simply put, prayer is talking with God. But even deeper, prayer is a way of life that is an outflow of walking intimately with God. This is why prayer was central to Jesus and why we believe that it is essential for his followers. We're going to go over some basics, but remember that the heart of prayer is relationship.

Where do I begin?

Start Here

The first step to prayer is to see it as a vital part of your relationship with God. And that makes sense. We all know that communication is essential in our other relationships with our friends and family.

Keep it simple, keep it real, keep it going.

P.R.A.Y. (Pause, Rejoice, Ask, Yield)

In Pete Grieg's book How to Pray: A Simple Guide for Normal People, he provides a helpful place to start. Using the Lord's Prayer, Grieg explains the major movements of prayer with the appropriate acronym PRAY for pause, rejoice, ask, and yield.

Pause

To start we must stop. To move forward we must pause. This is the first step in a deeper prayer life: Put down you wish list and wait. Sit quietly. "Be still, and know that I am God" (Psalm 46:10). Become fully present in place and time so that your scattered senses can recenter themselves on God's eternal presence. Stillness and silence prepare our mind and prime your heart to pray from a place of greater peace, faith, and adoration. In fact, these are themselves important forms of prayer.

Rejoice

No one stares up at the northern lights thinking, Wow, I'm incredible! We are hardwired to wonder and therefore to worship. The Lord's prayer begins with an invitation to adoration: "Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name." Having paused to be still at the start of a prayer time, the most natural and appropriate response to God's presence is reverence. Try not to skip this bit. Hallowing the Father's name is the most important and enjoyable dimension of prayer. Linger here, rejoicing in God's blessings before asking for any more. Like an eagle soaring, a horse galloping, or a salmon leaping, worship is the thing God designed you to do.

Ask

Prayer means many things to many people, but at its simplest and most immediate, it means asking God for help. It's a soldier begging for courage, a soccer fan at the final, a mother alone in a hospital chapel. TheLord's Prayer invites us to ask God for everything from "daily bread" to "the kingdom come," for ourselves (petition) and for others (intercession).

Yield

The final step in the dance of prayer is surrender. It's a clenched fist slowly opening; an athlete lowering into an ice bath; a field of California poppies turning to the sun. We yield to God's presence "on earth as it is in heaven" through contemplative prayer and by listening to his Word, which is our "daily bread." We yield to God's holiness through confession and reconciliation, praying, "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us." And we yield to his power in spiritual warfare, asking our Father to "deliver us from evil." And so, in all these ways, it's by surrendering to God that we overcome, by emptying ourselves that we are filled, and by yielding our lives in prayer that our lives themselves become a prayer––the Lord's Prayer––in the end.

Now, let's Practice!

Using the PRAY model

Pause (1-2 minutes)

Find a comfortable spot and take some deep breaths. As you breathe in, invite the Holy Spirit to fill you with his peace during this time. As you breathe out, release any distractions and anxieties to God. A simple prayer you could repeat during this time is: God you are here, I am here with you.

Rejoice (2-3 minutes)

Spend some time praising God for who He is. Have you seen anything beautiful in nature lately? If so, thank God for his creation! Have you felt God's kindness towards you lately? Take some time to worship him for his goodness. What other gifts or blessings in your life can you take time to thank God for?

Ask (2-3 minutes)

Have your friends or family asked you to pray for anything lately? If so, bring those things before the Lord on their behalf. Are there other things you can think of to pray for people. Are there people in your life who don't know Jesus yet? What's going on in your life right now? Take some time to pray over the things you are going through. Nothing is too insignificant to bring before God! He is your Father and he loves you so much. He wants to hear about the things that are important to you. Are you nervous about a test? Tell him!

Yield (2-3 minutes)

This is time to be still before the Lord and ask if there's anything he wants to communicate to you. Remember, we believe God can and does speak to us! Ask in this time that the Holy Spirit would reveal any sin in your life that you need to bring before God for healing. You could repeat Samuel's prayer in this time, Speak Lord, for your servant is listening.

Peace Prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,

where there is hatred, let me sow love;

where there is injury, pardon;

where there is doubt, faith;

where there is darkness, light;

where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;

to be understood as to understand;

to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive,

it is in pardoning that we are pardoned,

and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.
