God made us to be people who experience a full spectrum of emotion, emotions that He created. Our emotions don’t surprise God, yet we are often hesitant to be honest with him (and ourselves) about how we feel. In the grand scheme of our lives as humans we will experience the heights and the depths of emotion, and it is so tempting to numb those emotions to more manageable levels. What if we didn't spend so much time escaping our real emotions? What if we allowed ourselves to feel the fullness of the heights and the depths, believing that Jesus was with us in both of those emotional spaces?
Where do I begin?
This is a blog post from a She Reads Truth reading plan called Mourning and Dancing. (Even though its from She Reads Truth it is powerful for boys too). Read the blog and then read the scripture passages listed at the top.
Now, let's Practice!
Ecclesiastes 3
Listen to this reading of Ecclesiastes 3. Journal as you listen. What are the verses that stuck out to you? How are they conflicting with each other? How are they connected?
Get a piece of paper and draw lines separating it into fourths. In the quadrants, write “God I am angry about”, “God I am sad about”, “God I am worried about”, “God I am glad about” and give yourself about 5 minutes per quadrant to sit and really think about how to answer these. You can do bullet points or full sentences. You may be surprised at how many things you write in each section. Give yourself the time and space to lay these emotions (and the circumstances that come with them) at the feet of Jesus.

You can do a whole reading plan through She Reads Truth - engaging in scripture from the whole Bible, experiencing the intimacy that comes from allowing God to be the place where you process your emotions.
This book is a powerful story of Gods nearness to us in times of emotional tumult, and we can learn from these stories how to let God meet us where we are truly at.
