The strategic initiatives included in this plan set a course for GIPS’ future that is consistent with the goals of Grow Grand Island, the Nebraska Department of Education, and the Grand Island Senior High vision committee.
Grow Grand Island is a coalition of leaders from the private and public sectors committed to the growth and prosperity of our community. GIPS is an active partner in Grow Grand Island and heavily involved in advancing its objectives related to fostering entrepreneurship and creativity in students, preparing students for careers in the region’s economy, engaging families in their child’s education and their own learning and development, and ensuring that all young children and families have access to high-quality early childhood education opportunities. The GIPS plan includes specific strategies that deepen and expand current work in these areas.
In 2016, the Nebraska Department of Education released a strategic plan that outlines how it will lead and support the preparation of all Nebraskans for learning, earning, and living over the next decade. The GIPS plan reflects many of the state’s priorities including a focus on operational efficiency; a commitment to providing all students with equitable access to rigorous and relevant curricula and instruction; a focus on the use of data to inform instruction and student supports; a dedication to increased student, family, and community engagement; opportunities to prepare young children for learning and older youth for success in college and careers; and a definition of student success that recognizes but pushes beyond traditional academic measures. In implementing its plan, GIPS will contribute to the state’s goals for students.
In fall 2016, a committee of stakeholders set out to create a long-term vision and plan for ensuring that Grand Island Senior High prepares every graduate for his/her next steps in life. Through engagement with staff and stakeholders and with consultative support from the District Management Group, the committee outlined a series of strategies for empowering students to take ownership of their learning and expand the knowledge and skills they will need to be successful, advance meaningful connections in support of their own well-being and development, and have expanded opportunities for relevant learning through community partnerships and family engagement. These goals and strategies are directly embedded within this strategic plan.
A coherence framework designed by Harvard University’s Public Education Leadership Project served as the conceptual basis for the design. Consistent with this framework, stakeholders worked to develop a plan that:
Recognizes that student achievement relies on rigorous content, the capacity of teachers to engage students in that content, and the readiness of students to engage in learning.
Identifies strategies that directly impact the instructional core, recognizing that changes to one feature of the core affect the other features.
Considers the ways in which structures, systems, resources, stakeholders, and culture must adapt to support improvement strategies.
Takes into account the environmental context in which the district operates with its related opportunities and constraints.
