Collaborative Research with University of Namur, Belgium on the "In the Shoes of an Algorithm" Project
Professor Hyeon-Seon Jeong and Professor Kyung Hur collaborated with University of Namur, Belgium on the "In the Shoes of an Algorithm" Project. This project was initiated by the Belgian research team lead by Dr. Jerry Jacques and originally developed as a design-based research based on a series of pen-and-paper games designed to (1) help teenagers sharing their daily experience of recommendation algorithms in order to identify core issues which should be addressed by media educators and (2) to foster a better understanding of key issues related to recommendation algorithms used by digital media platforms. The project was expanded as an international program of collaboration with a team of South Korean researchers and practitioners by reflecting the Korean youth culture of the use on YouTube and making the activities of the game rather simpler to be accommodated in the Korean classroom environments. The results of the collaboration was published as an article, "In the Shoes of an Algorithm": A Media Education Game for Addressing Issues Related to Recommendation Algorithm in the Journal of Education.
In the process of developing the project, the whole research team met in Seoul and presented the work and lead the workshop at the 2019 Seoul International Conference on Media and Information Literacy hosted by the Korean National Commission for UNESCO. The presentation session and the workshop are available on the official YouTube channel of the Korean National Commission for UNESCO.
