Bird Seed Cookies

April 22nd is Earth Day. On Earth Day, we are reminded of the many resources that our Earth provides for us. It is also a good time to remember that it is our responsibility to take care of our Earth. In this activity, you will create bird seed cookies. This is another take on a bird feeder. With some simple ingredients, you can ensure that the birds will been well taken care of. For instructions and materials click here.

Watch the video to find out how to make bird seed cookies for Earth Day.

Easter Egg Zip Line

Easter is almost here! There are so many fun things that we can only find at Easter! But what do we do when Easter is over and we have lots and lots of eggs left? One fun activity that you can do is design and test an Easter egg zip line! In this activity, you will use simple materials from around your house to create an egg zip line to deliver an egg to a friend! Click on the link for a material list and instructions on how to create the egg zip line!

Valentine's Day Circuit Card

We all enjoy giving cards on Valentine's Day to friends and family to let them know how much we care about them. This year, why not send an extra special card that lights up! In this activity, you will explore electrical circuits by creating your own light up Valentine's Day cards. You will need some specialty supplies including small LED lights, coin cell batteries, and conductive tape (this can be aluminum HVAC tape or coper tape - coper is a much stronger conductor so coper tape will work better than the aluminum). Check out the website for instructions on how to create the Valentine Paper Circuits. You can also click here for the Valentine pintables.

If you are interested in creating paper circuits and need supplies, please email me at cmartin@gilesk12.net for a paper circuit kit.

Design A Snow Sled

It's January and Winter is here! Although it is very cold outside this time of the year, the cold temperatures bring one of our favorite types of precipitation! Snow!!! In this engineering activity, you will be designing a snow sled. In this challenge, you will see if you can build a snow sled that will move slow. Then, you will design a snow sled that can move really fast. This activity uses materials that you probably already have around your house! Check it out now!

Building A

Gingerbread House

It's already December and what better engineering activity to do in December than to build a gingerbread house! This gingerbread house is a little more difficult for you Christmas engineers out there because you will be using graham crackers. In order to build this gingerbread house, you will need to cut your graham crackers to size. Being the Christmas engineer that you are, don't just stop at the house! See what other structures you can build using your graham crackers. Check out the video to see instructions on how to cut the graham crackers, how to assemble the house, and how to make rock hard icing to hold your house together!

Designing A Teepee

Did you know that the Indian tribes used materials that they found in their environment to build their homes? They were natural engineers using materials available to them to create something they needed! In this activity, you will use some supplies from your kitchen to design and construct your own teepee. Watch the short video on Native American homes. Then, click on the Teepee Desing Challenge for activity instructions!

Pop Up Paper Cards

Wouldn't it be fun to give someone a card that popped up when they opened it? In this activity, you will learn how to make pop up card structures. With paper, scissors, crayons, and your imagination, you can create all sorts of wonderful pop up cards. Click here for instructions and check out the video too! Once you learn how to make pop up cards, see if you can find some other patterns to make different pop ups.

Paper Block Structures

Who loves to build with blocks? I know that I love to build fun structures with blocks and then knock them over! Have you ever tried to build a structure with paper blocks? In this activity, you can create triangle paper blocks using scissors and tape and then use your blocks to build wonderful creations. Check out the video and this link for instructions.
