GCPS Literacy Vision:
In Giles County Public Schools, we believe that teaching all of our students to read is one of our most fundamental responsibilities. We understand that the ability to read affects all other academic areas and is associated with social, emotional, economic, and physical health. It is our job to ensure all of our students learn to read and read to learn so they are empowered for success.
Â
In Giles County Public Schools, we will:
Provide explicit, systematic, skills-focused instruction in the foundational areas of phonemic awareness and phonics using a structured literacy approach in grades K-3. In grades 4-5 advanced phonics and morphology skills will be taught using high-quality instructional materials.
Provide explicit instruction in comprehension and vocabulary, using complex text to build vocabulary knowledge and make meaning through speaking and in writing.
Facilitate the success of all students by using data-based decision making with targeted intervention for students who demonstrate reading difficulties.
Ensure students receive instruction from teachers well-versed in science-based reading research and evidence-based literacy instruction.
Ensure teachers, reading specialists, interventionists, and administrators receive ongoing professional development and support in effectively teaching reading.
