Grades in Art
Notes about grades
Please remember as you look at your child's grades that they have art once a week for 40 minutes - and learning takes time!
Grades are entered into Infinite Campus Quarterly - they will not be entered weekly. Special areas (PE & Art specifically) see over 800 students a week so this is the requirement set by district and Infinite campus has been set up to receive only the quarterly grade - not individual assignments.
If your student is getting a 1 you will be contacted directly to discuss your child's progress, these students will probably need additional help. - you will be contacted before the end of the quarter so your student knows, and has a chance to improve their grade.
If your student is receiving a 2 do not fear! They are progressing toward the standard, and likely we just have not finished our learning in this quarter. It will be continued throughout the year. A 2 is comparable to the former S (Satisfactory)
Allow your child to have time to learn, and to self advocate - we have frequent formative assessment where the teacher walks around the room and discusses progress and gives suggestions for improvement.
Parents, please allow your student to make mistakes, experiment, and not be afraid of art - We are trying to cultivate a growth mindset where we say "This might be hard, but I am still learning and I can get better at this"
Ask your student how art went on their art day and encourage them to try their best. It takes artists their whole career to understand the elements, develop a voice, and make high quality art works.
Rubric for Projects
This rubric is used for assessing our projects for the quarter. We usually complete 1-3 projects in a quarter. The first quarter, we have several introductory activities (whole school collaborative, setting up sketchbooks etc...) so will likely only complete 1 project.
The Baking Analogy refers to grades K-2 but is applicable to all grade levels. It is simplified to K-2 to help all understand.
