Kindergarten is a very special time in a child's school life and in their own cognitive development. Each child is also in a different place in the development of their motor skills. In kindergarten music class, Kindergarten students practice the things that we may not think about as adults in our day to day lives.
Kindergarten students learn about the different ways a person can use their voice (Whisper, Talk, Shout, and Sing), identify when to use a particular voice, and when not to.
For adults, moving to the beat of the music playing at the store, or keeping up with an uptempo song during a work-out at the gym might be very natural, for many students, kindergarten music class is the first time a student might start to think about the beat or pace of a song. We also practice identifying when something non-musical has a beat, such as dribbling a basketball, the tick of a clock, or the sound of a training moving along it's track. Students also learn to identify when something doesn't have a beat, such as the sound of water when turning on the facet, or a gust of wind blowing in the air.
We also play many different games and activities as we learn standard music concepts such as loud and soft, fast and slow, high pitch and low pitch, patterns, and identifying sounds such as different instruments or sounds found in nature.
In addition to all these musical concepts your student will practice through out the year, students also practice social skills that will follow them their whole lives such as playing and working together, playing fair, being kind, and having fun trying new things.
Much of what 1st grade does builds upon the foundational skills practiced in Kindergarten. Activities become slightly more complex.
Games, circle activities and line dances also become more complex with additional steps to remember, more interesting melodies to sing, while also practicing fundamental concepts like moving to the beat.
There is a grade level performance at the end of the year for 1st graders. More details to be announced later in the year.
