The Deaf/Hard of Hearing (D/HH) Department in Gilbert Public Schools has a resource program specifically designed for students with hearing loss. It is currently based at Burk Elementary. If you have a student in GPS that is Deaf/hard of hearing and in need of more intensive services, your student may receive services in the D/HH resource program. D/HH students are integrated in a general education classroom and receive services from a Teacher of the Deaf/Hard of Hearing. The type and level of services are determined based on the child's needs. At this campus, there is an opportunity for students to interact with other students with hearing loss. Interpreters are provided for those students that utilize sign language as their primary mode of communication. There is also a speech language pathologist on the campus that works with the students who are deaf/hard of hearing. Services are provided by Arizona teachers with Hearing Impaired certifications. These teachers are uniquely qualified to provide services to students who are Deaf/hard of hearing.
